TROOP 778 SWIMMING/FISHING SERVICE CAMPOUT

CAMP MacCLOSSON LONEDELL, MO

AUGUST 22 – 24, 2008

Meet at Stanton at 5:45 pm; depart at 6:00 pm. Return to Stanton at 12:30 on Sunday.

Patrols should plan for a non-cooked but healthy breakfast (cereal, fruit, etc.), a cooked or non- cooked lunch and a very good cooked dinner on Saturday; a cooked or non-cooked breakfast on Sunday.

Saturday morning will be spent on service projects for the Camp. These will include cutting cedar trees and sinking them in the lake to provide cover for fish. We may also be cutting and stacking firewood for the cabins and clearing brush.

Saturday afternoon can be spent swimming, hiking, fishing, working on requirements or whatever else Patrols wish to do.

Scouts are strongly encouraged to bring their fishing gear. The lake is stocked with bass and bluegill. If caught, regardless of size, these must be released back into the lake. However, there is a large number of green sunfish in the lake. These fish have yellow bottoms and greenish or bluish tops. This is an aggressive fish and is having a negative impact on the bass and bluegill populations. If caught, sunfish should be removed from the lake. Small ones can be thrown back into the woods or over the dam. Sunfish large enough to filet can be part of dinner. The sunfish are biting on worms, jigs, hotdogs, crickets, cheese, etc. in five to eight feet. Use a bobber.

Patrols have the option of building shelters instead of using tents. Depending upon the weather (rain is forecast) we may or may not bring the tents. Patrols should be prepared to build individual Scout shelters or one large enough for a Patrol, using plastic tarps, rope and stakes. We will bring the aluminum poles from the trailer, but there may not be enough for every shelter. Be sure to include something to put under sleeping bags and pads in addition to overhead cover. Live trees of any size may not be cut for use in a shelter.

Regardless of the forecast, Scouts should be prepared with sunscreen and hats. Swim shoes are recommended for the lake. Hats and raingear are a must, and will be checked before departure from Stanton. Bring your swim trunks and a towel.

Directions to Camp MacClossen will be available at the Troop Meeting on August 20 and at Stanton prior to departure for those Scouts who will be arriving late.

We will be sharing Camp MacClosson with another Troop. Scout behavior is expected at all times.
