Capturing the Beauty Of

AWQ 3MI – Digital Photography Capturing the Beauty of

Introduction It is always best whenever possible to photograph using natural light. One of the most beautiful seasons to be outside photographing is definitely “FALL”. The colours that abound at this time of the year are incredible; orange, yellow, and red set the world a fire and gives a photographer breathtaking scenery to photograph. Capturing these colours is as simple as taking a walk through a beautiful city park, a nature trail or simply going into your own back yard. No matter where you photograph “FALL” you are almost guaranteed magnificent photographs.

1 5 Tips for Capturing Color Tip 1: Look for the Unexpected. Whether it's a neon pink car parked next to a dull brown building or a brightly coloured umbrella, unexpected bursts of color that break up regular scenery make shots interesting. Tip 2: Seek out Complementary or Contrasting Colors. Looking for colors to tell a visual story is a composition technique that is used to convey the "mood" or "feeling" of a place. Tip 3: Find the Light. The direction or angle of light in a photograph can add a sense of drama to an otherwise lack lustre location. Avoid your camera's flash and look for natural or other sources of light. Tip 4: Zero In On a Single Color. Focusing on a single color allows you to appreciate more intricate details within the subject itself. Tip 5: Search for Patterns. Lines, textures, forms, and shapes all provide a sense of harmony within photographs. They can elevate a simple shot to fine art photography.

The Project

Total of Photographs required for this assignment: 14 Photographs

You are expected to photograph the “Fall” images listed below. Pay close attention to the requirements of each photograph.

1. 2 images of the sun-light through foliage – Show natural light filtering through foliage. Remember, you are shooting into the light source. You may require the use of your flash. Use the landscape mode for one photograph and the second to be taken with portrait mode on your camera. Two pictures are to be taken of two different foliage situations; the portrait mode photograph will be converted with the use of PSE. Please do not shoot the image with your camera set at black and white. 2. 2 images of leaves – Show repetition of leaves to create a beautiful pattern. This image must show a close up of the subject with the back ground as a less significant part of the photograph. Use the portrait mode on your camera. This photography will be in colour. The second photograph should be a close up of a leaf. The background is minimal in this photograph. Use the macro mode on your camera. Both photographs are in colour. 3. 2 images of people in Fall – These photos are to be taken of a person wearing "cool colours" (variations of colours in the blue, purple and green) in a Fall setting. This first picture should be taken in portrait mode on your camera. Next take a shot of a person in a Fall landscape, using the landscape mode on your camera. Both photographs are to be in colour. The landscape mode photograph will be altered in PSE with colour modifications. 4. 8 images to create a Fall panoramic shot- Stand in an expansive natural space that you find of interest. With the camera steady, take 8 photographs in succession. The camera must remain steady and in the same horizontal plane. It is also wise to overlap each picture slightly (about 40%). These photographs will be paced together to create a panoramic photograph in PSE. Do not use a panoramic setting on your camera. It is expected that each photo will have the necessary centre of focus, good cropping, depth of field, and sharpness as required of all good photography.
