Course Description: Designed for office applications. Emphasizes the introductory concepts of Adobe Photoshop to edit images. Provides instruction in using digital equipment to create images for use with Adobe Photoshop. Uses various features of the program – selection tools, layers, channels, masks, painting tools, etc. – to complete specific projects. Covers the vocabulary specific to Adobe Photoshop.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will have an understanding of, or be able to apply, the following principles and concepts: 1. Understand the vocabulary specific to Adobe Photoshop. 2. Differentiate between analog and digital source images. 3. Understand the differences in the file formats and resolution settings that are used for print and Web distribution. 4. Understand the appropriate color modes for different applications. 5. Gain a basic understanding of tonal ranges and image correction. 6. Understand the Photoshop Toolbox and which tools are used to perform specific tasks. 7. Understand how to strategically approach projects that call for the use of layers and how to optimize their application. 8. Understand how to work with text elements so your messages are clearly seen and understood. 9. Understand how to use Photoshop to create compelling Web objects and mock-up Web pages that can later be exported to a dedicated Web-authoring program for publishing on the Internet.

Text & Materials: Text: Elizabeth Reading, Adobe Photoshop CS3—Revealed, Course Technology, 2008. Storage: a USB Memory device for image file storage. Photoshop files are too large to be stored on a floppy diskette and students cannot save their work on lab computers. Paper: One ream of 8 ½ x 11 inch, 24 pound laser printer paper (available from the student store or any office supply store). Portfolio: A 3-ring binder to keep printouts of in-class work and homework.

Teaching Methods and Course Policies: 1. Lectures/Demonstrations: Important material from the text and outside sources will be covered in class. You should plan to take careful notes as not all material can be found in the text or readings. Discussion is encouraged as is student-procured, outside material relevant to topics being covered.

New concepts are introduced during each lecture/lab class and students will complete a sample project during each demonstration. Additional individual projects will be assigned to reinforce the skill set presented. These projects may be completed in class as time permits or outside of class.

2. Assignments: Skills Reviews, Project Builders, and other projects and readings will be assigned to help support and supplement material found in the lessons. These assignments may require the use of various software applications.

Work-in-progress files will be saved to your USB device. Completed assignments will be printed and placed in you portfolio (3-ring binder).

3. Quizzes: Occasional scheduled or unscheduled quizzes will be given to help ensure you stay up with assigned material. Missed quizzes cannot be made up, however, one quiz (lowest score) will be dropped at the end of the semester.

4. Exams: Two mid-term exams will be given. The exams will be closed book/note and will test assigned readings, material discussed in class, and production activities related to the assigned chapters. Exams may contain material from previous chapters.

Make up exams will not be given. If you are unable to attend any exam class session, you must contact the instructor at least two class periods prior to the exam to make other arrangements. Only official excuses will be accepted. Any unexcused missed exam will result in a score of 0 for that exam.

5. Final Exam: The final exam will on Monday, December 17th at 7:30 – 9:30pm. The final exam will be comprehensive. The final exam is mandatory; students who do not take the final exam will fail the course.

6. Portfolio: Each student will collect their completed assignments into a 3-ring binder, thus creating a portfolio of their work.

7. Cell Phones and Electronic Devices: As a common courtesy to all students in the class, the following rules will apply as to the use of electronic devices during class:

 All cell phones will be silenced and should not be answered during the class period.  Text messaging during the class period is not permitted.  iPods and other MP3 devices should be turned off and stored during the class period.  All other electronic devices not mentioned should be turned off and stored during the class period unless specific permission to use such devices is granted by the instructor.  Under no circumstances shall any device be used during an exam period without specific instructor permission.

Failure to abide by these class rules may result in the student being asked to leave class for the day. Continued violations may result in a final grade reduction based on class participation.

8. Attendance/Missed Classes: Photoshop techniques accumulate in a systematic manner. Students risk losing valuable momentum if class sessions are missed; thus class attendance is crucial for development of Photoshop skills. Quizzes and assignments may be presented at any time during the class session. The final 15 minutes of each class are reserved for saving files and gathering materials. The lab will close promptly at 9:30 p.m.

Students are expected to be in class on time and to remain for the entire class period. Role will be taken at the beginning of class and/or after the break. Tardiness is disruptive to the class in addition to being unprofessional; absences and tardiness will directly affect your grade.

Any student who has unexcused absences equaling one week’s worth of class time prior to census date may be excluded. Students may drop the class in the Admissions Office, on-line, or by phone on or before the last day to drop. Students should never rely on the instructor to exclude them. It is the student’s responsibility to drop classes in time to avoid fees and/or grades of “W.”

STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER RELY ON THE INSTRUCTOR TO EXCLUDE THEM.

By the last day to add (September 15, 2007), students are responsible for informing the instructor of any anticipated absences due to observance of major religious holidays so that quizzes or exams will not be scheduled on those days.

If you must be absent from class, you are responsible for obtaining material, which may have been distributed on class days when you were absent. This can be done through contacting a classmate who was present or by contacting the instructor during her office hours or other times by arrangement. Missed or late quizzes cannot be made up under any circumstances but with good cause and adequate notice, an early quiz may be given. There are no make-up exams.

Need for Accommodations: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as outlined, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify the instructor as soon as possible. Important Dates:
