8. Provision of scientific and technical training to personnel from other OIE Members

1. OIE Twinning Project between the Teramo Institute and the National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA), Cuba. a. One Veterinarian and one biologist were trained in the Laboratories of G. Caporale Institute on anatomo-pathology of the disease, tissue sampling, microbiological culture, mycoplasma identification by PCR. (March-April 2010) b. A 3 days training course on “Mycoplasmas of Ruminants” was held on 12-14 October 2010 at CENSA, La Habana, Cuba 2. OIE Twinning Project between the Teramo Institute and the Botswana National Veterinary Laboratory (BNVL) Three specialists from the Institute went to the BNVL for final training on diagnostic procedures and production of diagnostic reagents. (27 April – 21 May 2010)

Final Meeting on the occasion of the closure of the Twinning Project between the Institute and BNVL: Presentation of the BNVL as OIE Reference Laboratory candidate, Gaborone, Botswana. Co-organiser BNVL, 20 participants, including representatives of Veterinary Services from South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Zambia. Conclusions & recommendations provided with the final report of the Twinning Project.

11. Participation in international scientific collaborative studies

1. Collaborative research study in progress: Identification of novel immunogenic proteins of MmmSC for the development of a vaccine able to induce a cell mediated immune response. Objective: development of a recombinant vaccine based on MmmSC target proteins; outcome: recombinant vaccine. In collaboration with the Moredum Research Institute, Bacterial Disease Division, Pentlands Science Park, Scotland, UK, International, the Livestock Research Institute of Nairobi (Kenia), the Central Veterinary Laboratory Windhoek, Namibia and the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Balmoral, Zambia. 2. Assessment of the regulatory T cell immune response in the course of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp mycoides SC experimental infections. The project aimed to: a) Investigate the immune pathogenic mechanisms involved in MmmSC infections; b) Analyse, quantitatively and qualitatively, the distribution of bovine B and T lymphocyte components, antibody isotypes and cytokine profile in order to understand humoral and cell- mediated reactivity during MmmSC infections. The project was run in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute of Nairobi, Kenya, VLA of Weybridge (UK), the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Balmoral, Zambia and the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Windhoek, Namibia. The project started in march 2007 and was completed in march 2010. The project highlighted some new aspects of CBPP pathogenic mechanisms.
