HSC/GCE ‘A/AS’ LEVELS Instructions to Candidates

You are advised to read carefully the following instructions and the ‘Notice to candidates’ printed on the verso of your timetable’. A GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. IDENTIFICATION AND ADMISSION INTO THE EXAMINATION ROOM

1.1 PRIVATE CANDIDATES

In case you are above eighteen you should bring your National Identity Card each time you attend an examination session. If you are under eighteen you will receive the MES Identity/Admission Card from the Supervisor on the first day of the written examination and you should bring this card each time you sit for an examination.

You are strongly advised to visit your examination centre before the start of the examination.

1.2 SCHOOL CANDIDATES You should bring either your Student Identity Card or NTA Identity Card each time you sit for an examination session. In case you do not possess any of the above two documents, you should produce an appropriate documentary evidence duly certified by the Head of School. The documentary evidence should bear your photograph and the seal of the school.

In case you take examination in another centre than your school, you are strongly advised to visit your examination centre before the start of the examination.

1.3 You should place your National Identity Card/MES Identity Card/Student Identity Card/NTA Identity Card on your desk throughout each examination session for identification.

1.4 YOU ARE EXPECTED TO BE PROPERLY DRESSED. School candidates should wear their uniforms when attending an examination.

2. KEY TIME AND TIME TO ATTEND EXAMINATION CENTRE Key time is a time, local to each country when all candidates must be either in an examination or under Full Centre Supervision. 2.1 For Mauritius the Key Time for the morning session is 09 00 hours, the afternoon session 13 00 hours and the evening session is 17 00 hours. All candidates entering for examinations in a session will be under Full Centre Supervision at the above Key Time.

2.2 Examinations for the morning papers are normally scheduled at 08 00 hours, the afternoon papers at 12 00 hours.

2.3 There are a few papers which are scheduled after the Key Time. For morning papers starting after 09:00 you should be in attendance at your respective centre as from 08:45 unless you are already at the centre taking another paper. For afternoon papers starting after 13:00 you should be in attendance at your respective centre as from 12:45 unless you are already at the centre taking another paper. You will be under Full Centre Supervision.

2.4 When you will be under Full Centre Supervision you can have access to your books and notes. However, you will not have any access to telephones, mobile phones, the internet or any means of external communication. 2.5 You are strictly advised to be in attendance at your centre at the time indicated on column ‘Time to attend Examination Centre’ on your timetable. In case you arrive late or after the starting time/key time you are warned that Cambridge MAY NOT ACCEPT YOUR SCRIPT. 3 LATE ARRIVALS 3.1 If you arrive late for an examination, you may be allowed to sit the examination. However, Cambridge may not accept your script. If you arrive after the Key Time, Cambridge will pay particular attention to the extent to which it considers the security of the examination was maintained. 3.2 You will be given a plastified ‘Announcement Card’ if you arrive late for an examination. You are requested to read carefully the instructions prior to start your exams. 3.3 If you do not attend Full Centre Supervision, where required, you will be considered as late. This case will be reported to Cambridge and Cambridge reserves the right not to accept your script. 4. TIMETABLE CLASHES You will take both papers on the same day with a supervised break of at least 30 minutes as indicated on the letter submitted to you and which has been copied to the Supervisor. You should bring your lunch as you will not be allowed to leave the examination room between any two papers. You are also advised to make the necessary transport arrangements, if the examination ends late on such days.

5. WARNING : COMMUNICATION DEVICES (MOBILES PHONES, SMART DEVICES ETC) 5.1 No communication device (mobile phones, smart devices etc) is permitted on the premises of the examination centre under any circumstances. You are strongly advised to abide strictly by this regulation.

5.2 If you are found in possession of a communication device during the examination you may be disqualified from the syllabus. This applies whether the device/phone is switched on or off.

5.3 The Supervisor will be requested to enforce strictly the above instructions.

5.4 In case you are in possession of a communication device at the examination centre, you should switch it off and place it in your bag outside the examination room or hand it over to the Supervisor immediately. The Supervisor will in no way be responsible for the loss of any communication device.

6. LEAVING THE EXAMINATION

You will not be allowed to leave the room after the examination until you are advised to do so by the Invigilator/Supervisor.

7. ILLNESS 7.1 In case you are sick during the examination you must immediately report it to the Invigilator. Should you be given extra time or compensated time for illness you must give a written statement at the end of examination indicating the number of minutes allocated to you. If you have to go to the hospital or are examined by a doctor the original Medical Certificate has to be forwarded to the MES through the Rector, if you are a school candidate. 7.2 In case you are admitted to a hospital/clinic and wish to sit the examination there you are requested to:

(i) Inform MES immediately. (ii) Submit a Medical Certificate indicating that you are medically fit enough to take the examination at the hospital. (iii) Submit a Preparation Form 7 (Candidate Supervision Declaration Form) at the end of the examination.

8. PENCIL CASINGS

8.1 You should bring in the examination transparent pencil casings. Invigilators have been instructed to check the transparent pencil casings of candidates. You must not use any form of correcting medium, including correcting fluid, correcting pen and correcting tape.

8.2 WARNING Non-transparent pencil casing is not authorised in the examination room. This would be considered as non- authorised material and will be placed outside the room.

9. UNAUTHORISED MATERIALS

An announcement is made before the start of each examination. If you have in your possession any unauthorised material you should place it in your bag outside the room.

You may take into the examination room only those articles, instruments or materials which are expressly permitted in the rubric of a question paper, stationery list or in the syllabus booklet for the subject being examined. All unauthorised materials including bags will be kept outside the examinations room. Valuables, mobiles, money, etc left in your bag outside the examination room will be at your own risk.

You must not take into the examination room calculator cases or instruction leaflets, bags, non-transparent pencil cases, personal TVs or computers of any sort, tablet computers, e-readers, electronic or radio communication and/or recording devices including mobile telephones, smart devices and their cameras, Bluetooth headsets, portable music players or any other electronic devices that enable external communication or storage and retrieval of data, any packing with images or text on it. Anyone found in possession of any unauthorised material even if it is switched off and they do not intend to use it, will automatically be disqualified from the subject being taken.

Water bottles without labels may be allowed in the examination room.

10. ANSWER BOOKLET You will be provided with one Answer Booklet per component for papers requiring questions to be answered in a booklet. Continuation Booklet will be provided in case of need.

HSC/GCE ‘A’ LEVEL Page 3 of 8 Instructions to candidates Ensure that your name, Index Number and all necessary information have been entered on your answer booklet and continuation booklet. Group together any continuation booklet (including rough work) in question number order and attach them to your Answer Booklet using the string provided.

For multiple choice papers, a pre-printed answer sheet showing your Index Number will be provided. Check that the details are correct and sign in the space provided. Only soft pencil (B or HB) to shade the letter you think is correct for each answer should be used. Ensure that you answer on the multiple choice answer sheet on not on the question paper.

11. ROUGH WORK

You must do all rough work on the Answer Booklet, unless it states otherwise on the question paper or syllabus. Any rough work should be attached with the question paper/answer booklet and sent to Cambridge. In case of multiple-choice papers, you must do any rough work on the question paper itself. You should neatly cross through rough work but not obliterate it. Paper clips or staples should not be used.

12. TOILET ARRANGEMENTS

You should fill in the “Form LT – Record of permission to Leave Examination Room Temporarily” if you have to go to the toilet. You will be accompanied by an Invigilator.

13.1 SUSPECTED CANDIDATE MALPRACTICE The following are examples of malpractice by candidates. The list is not exhaustive and Cambridge may consider other instances of malpractice at its discretion:  failing to attend Full Centre Supervision (where required)  using highlighters on answer sheets or papers  misuse of examination material  behaving in such a way as to undermine the integrity of the examination  failure to abide by the conditions of supervision designed to maintain the security of the examinations  disruptive behaviour in the examination room (including the use of offensive language)  introducing unauthorised material into the examination room (e.g notes, study guides and personal organisers, own blank paper, calculators, dictionaries (when prohibited), personal stereos, mobile phones or other similar electronic devices)  obtaining, receiving, exchanging or passing on information which could be examination-related (or attempting to) by any means or copying on another candidate  impersonation; pretending to be someone else, arranging for another to take one’s place in an examination  the inclusion of inappropriate, offensive or obscene material in scripts or coursework  copying from another candidate (including the misuse of ICT to do so)  collusion, working collaboratively with other candidates  plagiarism, the failure to acknowledge sources properly and/or the submission of another person’s work as if it were the candidate’s own  theft of another’s work  the deliberate destruction of another’s work  the alteration of any results document, including certificates  failure to abide by the instruction of an invigilator  failure to abide by the conditions of supervision designed to maintain the security of the examinations  any attempt to remove or reveal the content of the examination outside the examination room, in contravention of the 24 hour security rule  talking about your examinations in internet chat rooms.  Use of offensive languages in the examination room.

13.2 SUSPECTED MALPRACTICE – MULTIPLE CHOICE PAPERS

Cambridge has rigorous standards and regulations in place to make sure that Cambridge candidates all over the world are treated equally and fairly. Cambridge carries out quality checks and identifies suspected malpractice for multiple choice papers by analysis of candidate responses. 14. COLLECTION / ISSUE OF QUESTION PAPERS (24 HOUR SECURITY RULE) As per Cambridge Regulations you are not allowed under any circumstances to take the question papers at the end of the examination. All question papers will be collected after each examination session. These question papers should be claimed from the Centre Supervisor 24 hours later. Question papers set at the end of the examination period should be collected at the centre on the next day. Cambridge International A Level Applied ICT Papers should be returned to Cambridge together with candidate answer scripts.

HSC/GCE ‘A’ LEVEL Page 4 of 8 Instructions to candidates 15. USE OF CALCULATORS You should note the following: 15.1 The calculator must be of a size suitable for use during an examination.

15.2 The power supply for the calculator is the responsibility of the candidate and must be integral to the calculator. You can bring a spare set of batteries into the examination room in transparent packaging.

15.3 The working condition of the calculator is your responsibility.

15.4 The calculator must be silent, with a visual display only.

15.5 Cambridge will not normally consider a calculator fault as justifying special consideration for the candidate.

15.6 You must not be in possession of calculator cases, instruction leaflets or instructions and formulae printed on the lid or cover of a calculator, or similar materials, during the examination. Anything printed on a lid or cover that you cannot remove must be securely covered.

15.7 You must not borrow calculators from other candidates during the examination for any reason, although the invigilator may provide you with a replacement calculator.

15.8 You can use programmable calculators. You must clear any information and/or programs stored in the calculator’s memory before and after the examination. Retrieval of prepared information and/or programs during the examination, or removal of question paper content from the examination room, is against the regulations.

15.9 The calculator must not be able to manipulate algebra, it must be purely numerical integration/differentiation. 15.10 Calculators with any of the following facilities are not allowed, unless stated otherwise in the syllabus:

 graphic display  data banks  dictionaries  QWERTY keyboards  built-in symbolic algebraic manipulations (output must be numeric not algebraic)  symbolic differentiation or integration (output must be numeric not algebraic)  capacity of remote communication with other machines. Cambridge regards the use of any such calculator as malpractice. Cambridge does not recommend any particular brand of calculator

B PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPECIFIC PAPERS: IMPORTANT NOTE: Parents or any other accompanying persons are not allowed in the examination room for any written and practical examination at any time.

1. FOOD STUDIES 9336/2 (Planning Session) Wednesday 21 September 2016

You are requested to be in attendance at Queen Elizabeth College, Rose Hill at 08:45. Please note that you are not allowed to bring in any theory notes (including practical and nutritional information) related to the planning. Food tables booklets will be provided. Only recipes are allowed.

FOOD STUDIES 9336/2 (Practical Session)

If you are taking the examination at 08:30 you should be in attendance at 08:00. If you sit for a practical session at a centre other than your school you are advised to visit the centre prior to the practical examination in order to familiarise yourself with the surrounding, utensils and equipment.

2. FRENCH (9094/5) LISTENING COMPREHENSION Thursday 03 November 2016

You should be in attendance at the Centre at the time indicated on your timetable. Candidates who will be examined in the first session (12:00) will be under full Centre Supervision till 13:30. In syllabuses in which the CD’s are controlled by the Supervisor, the CD’s, once started, will not be stopped except in case of a serious emergency. Noise from outside the examination room does not constitute a serious emergency and the CD will not be stopped in these circumstances.

i) Thursday 22 September 2016 – Task Analysis and Planning Session ii) Tuesday 27 September 2016 – Preparation Session - 08:00 - 10:00

You should be in attendance as from 07:45.

iii) Thursday 29 September 2016 – Implementation Session & Evaluation Session: 08:00-12:00. You should be in attendance at 07:45 and you will not be allowed to leave the examination room till the end of the Evaluation Session at 12:00.

4. ART AND DESIGN (9393)/1/2/3

You are requested to be in attendance at 07:45 at latest for papers 1 - 3 at the Centre indicated on your timetable. Please consult your Notes of Guidance.

You should pay particular attention to the Notes of Guidance issued to you along with the Question Papers. No more than two sheets (recto and verso) of preparatory work (Maximum size: A2) should be submitted. These should be sheets of preparatory work undertaken after receipt of the question paper.

5. SCIENCE PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS

Chemistry 9701/33 and 9701/34; Physics 9702/33 and 9702/34 and Biology 9700/33 are laboratory based practical papers.

You will take either Advanced Practical Skills 33 or Advanced Practical Skills 34 and attend the first or second session as indicated on your timetable.

The first session will start at 10:30 and will end at 12:30. You should be in attendance at 09:45 at the centre on the date indicated on your timetable and you will be sequestered till 13:30.

The second session will start at 13:15 and will end at 15:15. You should be in attendance at 12:30 at the centre on the date indicated on your timetable.

You may ask the Organiser for practical assistance if you are in real difficulty. However, the extent of this assistance will be recorded in Form S4 “Request for Assistance Form” and will be reported to the Examiner who may recommend deduction of marks.

6. GERMAN EXAMINATION

If you are taking German Paper 9717/1 (Speaking) or German Language Paper 8683/1 (Speaking) you should report to the centre indicated on your timetable.

For German Papers (9717/2, 3 & 4) and German Language Papers (8683/2 & 3) you should report to your respective examination centre where you will sit for the written papers.

7. SPANISH EXAMINATION

If you are taking Spanish Paper 9719/1 (Speaking) or Spanish Language Paper 8685/1 (Speaking) you should report to the centre as indicated on your timetable.

For Spanish Papers (9719/2, 3 & 4) and Spanish Language Papers (8685/2 & 3) you should report to your respective examination centre where you will sit for the written papers.

8. Please note that the end of your final timetable has been marked with the following Statement:

1. You must be on time for all your examinations and any required periods of supervision.

2. You must provide what you need e.g. pens, pencils and rulers.

3. You may use a calculator unless you are told not to do so. You must not use the calculator function of another device.

4. You must not become involved in any unfair or dishonest practice before, during or after the examination.

5. You must not: 0  sit an examination in the name of another candidate

 have in your possession any unauthorised material, including electronic devices and mobile phones

 have in your possession any equipment which might give you an unfair advantage.

6. Possession of a mobile phone or other unauthorised material is breaking the rules, even if you do not intend to use it. If found in possession of unauthorised material you will be subject to penalty and possible disqualification.

7. You must not talk to, attempt to communicate with or disturb other candidates once you have entered the examination room.

8. You must follow the instructions of the invigilator.

9. If you are in any doubt speak to the invigilator.

10. You must when leaving the examination room, leave behind the question paper, your answer book or answer paper, rough work and any other (used or unused) materials.
