Smart shoppers always look for the lowest price for the items they want to purchase. Most supermarkets have many different brands that sell similar products. The packages may come in different amounts, and you may not realize which is a better deal for your money.

You can save a lot of money when you are able to accurately compare the price per item. To find the price per item, divide the total amount by the number of items in the package. This will ultimately help you find the best price per count. This is also called the item’s “unit cost.”

EXAMPLE:

Sam is going on a camping trip this weekend. He needs to buy at least four AA batteries for his flashlight. Extreme Battery batteries come in packages of 6 batteries that cost $6.95 each. Battery Bright sells its batteries in a pack of 8 for $8.39. Which is a better deal? Step 1: Determine the cost of each Extreme Battery battery by dividing the price by the total of batteries per package. Remember to always round final answers up to the nearest cent! $6.95 ÷ 6 = $1.16 per battery

Step 2: Determine the cost of each Battery Bright battery in the same way.

$8.39 ÷ 8 = $1.05 per battery

Step 3: Compare the price per battery. The Battery Bright battery has a lower price per battery at $1.05 compared to Extreme Battery at $1.16.

Sam wants to get the best price on other items he needs for his camping trip. To help him make the best choices, determine the unit cost of each brand and, decide which brand gives him the best value for his money. Round to the nearest cent. one dozen hot dogs for $4.59 an 8-pack of hot dogs for $3.35
