Creating Source Cards and Works Cited Entries For each source used in your paper, you must have a SOURCE CARD that contains all pertinent publication information. This information will then become the Works Cited page that is a required part of your final research paper (term paper). Listed below are instructions for doing source cards for various types of sources and examples of each type. All information goes in the order shown, and you should leave out anything that does not apply to your source. For sources other than those listed here, please see me for instructions.

GENERAL NOTES for which you are responsible: 1. If the publisher’s name is the name of a person or persons, use the last name only. 2. Abbreviate all months except May, June, and July. 3. For place of publication, use city only (not state). 4. If more than one place of publication is given, use the first city listed. 5. If more than one date of publication is given, use the most recent date listed. 6. Anytime you must include a date, the order is always day month year (3 Apr. 1959). Books: Pattern: Author (last name, first name). “Title of Part of the Book.” Title of Book. Editor (Ed.) or Translator (Trans.). Edition used. Vol. number. Name of Series. City (only) of publication: Name of publisher, Date of publication. Page numbers. Medium of publication.

Example: Lazard, Naomi. “In Answer to Your Query.” The Norton Book of Light Verse. Ed. Russell Baker. 2nd ed. Vol. 1. Poetry of the Ages. New York: Norton, 1986. 52-53. Print.

Example: Murray, Donald M. Read to Write: A Writing Process Reader. New York: Random, 1986. Print. (Most ordinary books will use this shorter form.)

**** Random, McGraw, Norton, etc. are names of publishers. This is usually on the title page.*****

Encyclopedias: (well-known books sets like Encyclopedia Britannica*) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Encyclopedia. Year of publication ed. Medium of publication.

Example: Chiappine, Luciano. “Roman Empire.” Encyclopedia Britannica. 2006 ed. Print.

*Medical encyclopedias or other few volume encyclopedia sources must be cited like a book with full publication information . They will count as an encyclopedia source or as a book source, depending on your need.

Electronic Encyclopedia: (ON-LINE ENCYCLOPEDIAS) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Encyclopedia. Edition used. Place of publication: Name of publishing company, Date of publication. Medium of publication (Web or CD). Date of access.

Example: Holbein, Hans. “Albatross.” The Oxford English Dictionary. 2nd ed. Oxford: Oxford UP, 1992. Web. Date of Access. Magazines: (ACTUAL PUBLISHED MAGAZINES or PDF files with page numbers) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Magazine. Date of issue: page numbers. Medium of publication.

Example: Prince, Dinah. “Marriage in the ‘80s.” New Yorker. 1 Apr. 1987: 30-38. Print.

(Sources like Time, Newsweek, People, History Journal, U.S. News and World Report, Reader’s Digest, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, New Yorker, etc. are magazines.) Current Biography Illustrated, EBSCO, Points of View Reference Center: (ON-LINE MAGAZINES -- use above pattern if it is a PDF file) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Magazine. Date of Source: page number of original print source. Medium of publication. Date of access.

Example: McMichael, Anthony J. “Population, Environment, Disease, and Survival: Past Patterns, Uncertain Futures.” Lancet. 30 Mar. 2002: 1145. Web. 14 Jan. 2012.

Newspapers: (ACTUAL PRINTED NEWSPAPERS) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Newspaper. Date of issue: page number/section. Medium of publication.

Example: Tucker, Cynthia. “Education Stays on Top of Southerners’ Agenda.” Kansas City Star. 21 Mar. 2004: 19A. Print.

Newsbank: (ON-LINE NEWSPAPERS) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Newspaper. Date of issue: page number of original print source. Medium of publication. Date of access.

Example: Anderson, Veda. “Wetlands Preservation.” Reno Gazette-Journal. 3 Feb. 1992: C7. Web. 14 Jan. 2012.

Internet: (4TH SOURCE AND ONLY WITH PERMISSION) Pattern: Author. “Title of Article.” Title of Internet Site. Name of institution or organization sponsoring the site. Medium of Publication. Date of Access.

Example: Hoffman, Heinrich. “Struwwelpeter.” Nineteenth-Century German Stories. Foreign Lang. Dept., Virginia Commonwealth U. Web. 14 Jan. 2010.
