Becoming an Archived Artist

Becoming an Archived Artist

The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is interested in conferring Archived Artist status to professional, quality visual artists whose work best represents Ohio’s rich visual arts heritage and thriving traditions. Indeed, AAWR serves as Ohio’s "living archive” whose collection of artwork and biographical materials from the past 50 years spans a critical time period in the development of contemporary visual art.

Applicant artists must have a significant connection to Ohio. Their artwork, exhibition history, and credentials will be reviewed by the AAWR’s Peer Review Committee which makes recommendations on admission to the Board of Directors. If approved, the AAWR requests the donation of a representative portion of the Archived Artist’s body of work. Artwork, which is insured, may be exchanged or borrowed during the lifetime of the artist.

Archived Artists enjoy a number of benefits. First and foremost, the donation of representative art ensures the preservation of an artist’s lifework. Archived artwork is also displayed in exhibitions in our gallery (each incoming artist is assured of an inaugural show), online, and at other locations such as University Hospitals. In short, acceptance as an Archived Artist helps ensure that future generations will enjoy and appreciate their art.

The AAWR advances the artistic legacies of its Archived Artists not only by presenting exhibitions, but also by creating publications, recording oral histories, and collecting other biographical materials which are made available to scholars and the public.

Yet another benefit is that Archived Artists enjoy associating and networking with artists of comparable stature and accomplishment. Sometimes, artists are challenged to create new art for specific exhibitions along with their peers.

Those who are invited to become Archived Artists are expected to make a contribution to the organization’s endowment in consideration of their archival storage units. Prices for archival storage units currently start at $1,418 and payment plans are available. Persons interested in becoming an Archived Artist may complete the form below to start the process. Or, artists may call the AAWR at 216-721-9020 to arrange for a visit or ask questions.
