Region 2 Professional-Technical Academy Updated 9-8-2017 S.HolthausPage 1 Approximately 150 hours of online course work plus a minimum of 45 hours of clinical experience in a pharmacy.

Course Objective:

To train pharmacy technicians to pass a national pharmacy technician certification exam.

Course Description:

The Mosby’s Pharmacy Technician Principles & Practice textbook and assignments are designed as fundamental yet comprehensive resources that represent the very latest information available for preparing pharmacy technician students for today’s challenging job environments. This textbook covers all the theory and skills set forth by several national certifying bodies, including the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA). Each chapter has an online assignment and quiz followed by proctored comprehensive examinations taken at school.

Textbook Sections: General Pharmacy: General Pharmacy provides an overview of pharmacy practice as it relates to pharmacy technicians. The subjects include history, law and ethics, drug calculations and dosage forms, abbreviations, routes of administration, filling prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and the differences in the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Also there are entire chapters on alternative and complementary medicine and psychopharmacology. Body Systems: Body Systems provides a brief overview of each body system and the medications used to treat common conditions that afflict these systems. Unique to this section are detailed discussions of anatomy and physiology, as well as photographs of a number of drugs used to treat various conditions of each body system. Classifications of Drugs: Classifications of Drugs discusses major drug classifications. A description of every drug classification helps the pharmacy technician student understand how similar agents work. This section also includes a chapter on vitamins and minerals.

Independent Study: Textbook  Textbook chapter quizzes – each chapter has a quiz that must be taken after completion of the corresponding chapter assignment.  Assignments – Textbook chapters will have online assignments that are graded. Assignments must be passed with at least 90%.

Clinical:  Clinical – A minimum of 45 hours of experience is required. Students must register with the Idaho Board of Pharmacy. There is a registration fee (paid by the student). Because students are not yet high school graduates and/or 18 years old two forms are required: the Pharmacy Technician-in-Training Registration and the Pharmacy Technician-in-Training Waiver Request. Forms are available at the Idaho Board of Pharmacy websitehttps://bop.idaho.gov/licensing/pharm_technicians.html Students also have to obtain a fingerprinting card from the BOP and complete it prior to beginning clinical.  The student will keep a log and skills checklist of experiences and hours. The checklist and log must be completed by the student and signed by the pharmacist each time the student is at

Region 2 Professional-Technical Academy Updated 9-8-2017 S.HolthausPage 2 clinical. The checklist and hours log must be scanned and emailed or faxed to Sheri Daly at the end of the course before credit will be issued for a grade.

Course timing:

The course begins in the fall semester and is one year long. The 45 hours of clinical must begin by October 15 and be completed by May 1, 2018. The student must pass Textbook Chapter 3 (with an 80% or better) prior to clinical attendance. The student also needs to have completed the necessary paperwork with the Idaho Board of Pharmacy and sent their immunization sheet, TB skin test results and CPR card to Sheri Holthaus before beginning their clinical.

Certification:

The requirements to test for national certification are that the student must be a high school graduate and have no felony conviction or guilty plea. Idaho and many other states now require national certification for employment as a Pharmacy Technician. Idaho recognizes 2 different certifying organizations: 1. Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board (PTCB) at www.ptcb.org. Their exam costs approximately $130. Check the website for updated fees. 2. Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy technicians (ExCPT) at http://www.nationaltechexam.org/home.html. They charge approximately $110 for the exam. Please read their sites carefully to evaluate which would be best for you. Testing locations and schedules vary.

Academic Honesty:

Academic honesty mandates the use of one’s own thoughts and materials in writing papers, taking of tests, or completing other classroom or shop/lab related activities. Students who aid others in any infraction of academic honesty are considered equally guilty. The concept of academic honesty is designed to assure a uniform standard against which to evaluate all students and to prevent cheating. Students are expected to report infractions to their instructors. Violation of this policy may lead to a student’s failure of this course. See your school’s student handbook for other related policies and possible consequences.
