Students: Choose One Or More Activities to Complete

Social Studies COS 6.9

Name:______

Students: Choose one or more activities to complete.

Option 1: Historical Journal Students: Assume the role of a person involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Create journal entries spanning the decades of the 1950’s and 1960’s (teacher can specify the exact number of entries required). The journal entries must show how your person was involved in the events taking place and speculate on what the person might have experienced as a participant in the movement. Utilize primary sources to create your entries.

Option 2: Merging Time Students: Take the media advances of modern times and pretend that they were available during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Create a blog or Web site to discuss events and activities related to the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Rights, or the musical changes and musicians of the time. The blog or Web site will merge instant communication with a volatile time period. You are also encouraged to discuss more than one of the topics since they are easily related. The final post should include your thoughts on how that period of time might have been different with the current communication options that we have available.

Option 3: Music Critic Students: Select key musicians, songs, or poetry of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Create a presentation assessing how the music was a reflection of the time period. Presentations should include audio, video, and still images. You must explain the context, or meaning, behind the music, song, or poem.
