YES Prep Brays Oaks Calculator Policy
Who: For all students enrolled in math and science courses that count towards high school credit.
Math Courses Science Courses 8 Math Algebra I Chemistry Geometry Physics Algebra II AP Biology Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus AP Chemistry AP Calculus AP Physics AP Statistics
What: All students are expected to bring a graphing calculator to math class each day. YES Prep has adopted the Ti-Inspire calculator (TM or CX models, not CAS) as the “official” calculator of math and science instruction. Teachers will model all lessons using the Ti-Inspire model. If a student decides to purchase another brand of calculator with graphing capabilities, they will be expected to learn how to operate their calculator on their own time. Instructional time wasted due to a student’s inability to use their calculator because they chose to purchase a model other than the Ti-Inspire will not be tolerated. It is a distraction to their classmates and takes time away from not only their own learning, but to other’s learning as well.
When: All students enrolled in high school math and science courses need their calculator in class every day from the first day of the academic year.
Options for Acquiring a Calculator
Option A Option B Direct Purchase - NEW Direct Purchase - Used Purchase directly from retailer. Ti-Inspire Purchase a Ti-Inspire calculator from online calculators can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Target, discount retailer, amazon.com Office Depot, Staples, etc. $120.00 to $170.00 $30.00 - $120.00
Demerits for not having a calculator in class will begin on the 1st day of the 2014-2015 academic year. Teachers have the authority to conduct random “calculator” checks to ensure students are meeting calculator expectations. Students need to bring their calculator every day to class because it an essential tool for the mathematician—a doctor would not arrive to surgery without his scalpel, nor should a mathematician arrive to math and science class without their calculator.
Failure to have a calculator on the first day of school will result in a demerit for each day a student does not have a calculator for math and science class.
