The GCSE Speaking Exam: What do I need to know?

What do I need to know? The aim of the speaking exam is to show how you cope with the German needed in everyday situations and your ability to make yourself understood when speaking German.

It is important to remember that you are not expected to be able to speak fluent German in order to get a good GCSE grade. After all, how many people speak and write their own language without making mistakes? None! The important thing, in speaking and writing any language, is to be understood or to communicate with reasonable clarity.

The OCR speaking exam usually takes place in April/ early May. Your language teacher conducts the exam and it is recorded.

You will have to do the following tasks:  two role plays;  a presentation (on a topic of your choice);  have a general conversation on two topic areas (chosen from a set list of topics).

There are 50 marks available and it is worth 25% of your final GCSE grade.

Here is how the test is broken down for marking. Role-Play

 Always greet the examiner and say goodbye or thank you to the examiner.  Always use the polite form i.e. 'Sie…' in the role-plays.  Try not to use 'Hallo!' to greet the examiner as it sounds too English - use 'Guten Tag' instead.  In the section 2 role-play you will have to answer an unexpected question from the examiner.  In the section 3 role-play (higher) you should try and say 3 things about each picture, including giving an opinion.

Presentation This is your chance to show off what you can do! You speak for one minute on a topic of your choice. You are allowed a cue card with five key words on it. You will be asked two or three questions about your topic. Prepare three or four questions and answers that you think you could be asked in advance.

Conversation For your conversation you must answer questions on two topic areas that you will have prepared in advance. You won't know which topics you will have in the exam so you have to prepare them all. If you have done your presentation on one of the topics below, you will not be asked conversation questions on that topic.

How is my speaking test marked?

Role-play 1 & 2 4 items, each marked 2, 1, 0 2 You get your message across clearly, using the right tense and probably in a whole 3 sentence. 1 You get the message across, but not in a whole sentence 0 You can’t say anything and need a lot of ‘prompting’ by the examiner.

Section 3 Narrative Role-play – 8 marks (Higher) You speak confidently, at a really good speed and you sound fluent. You cover all the points of the story board. 8 You give opinions and reasons for your opinions You add extra imaginative detail added and answer the questions the tester asks as you go. Past tense? No problem, you use it confidently all the way through. 7/ You speak quite confidently, at a good speed and you sound very fluent. You cover all the points of the story board and only need a little help from the 6 teacher/examiner, answering the questions the tester asks as you go along. You give opinions and reasons for your opinions. You speak quite well, at an OK speed and you sound quite fluent, although you 5/ hesitate at times. 4 You cover most of the main points of the story board with some help from the tester, answering the questions the teacher/examiner asks as you go along. You give some opinions and reasons when you are asked for them. 3/ You speak hesitantly and at a slow speed. You cover some of the main points of the story board but with lots of gaps. 2 You find answering the questions the teacher/examiner asks you really difficult. You don’t give any opinions. You speak really slowly, with lots of hesitations. You sound very ‘English’. 1/ You only manage to say a couple of sentences and what you say doesn’t link up into 0 a story. You can’t answer the questions the teacher/examiner asks you.

Presentation – 4 marks Excellent, well-organised preparation and delivery of your talk. 4 You talk very clearly and confidently. You have a range of opinions and justifications. You can answer the questions the tester asks you easily. Good preparation and delivery of your talk. You talk clearly and confidently. 3 You have a range of opinions and reasons. You can answer the questions the tester asks you quite easily. Fairly good preparation and delivery of your talk. You talk clearly and confidently. 2 You have some opinions. You can answer the questions the tester asks you sometimes 1 You are really hesitant and need loads of help from the tester to say give your talk. You don’t say anything that can be marked. 0 (Don’t get into this situation, make sure you spend enough time learning your talk and always ask for help when you need it.)

Discussion of Presentation and Conversation – Communication 10 marks 4  Outstanding. You can discuss your presentation topic really easily.  You handle both conversation topics very impressively, showing initiative by giving lots of extra detail and information in your answers. 10  You give a wide range of opinions and reasons for your opinions.  You speak confidently, at a really good speed and you sound fluent.  Past and future tenses? No problem, you use them confidently all the way through.  You can discuss your presentation topic easily.  You handle both conversation topics very well, showing initiative by giving extra detail and information in your answers. 9/  You give a good range of opinions and reasons for your opinions. 8  You answer questions confidently, and the tester doesn’t have to re-phrase the questions so that you can answer them.  Past and future tenses? No problem, you use them well all the way through, although you might make a few small mistakes.  You answer questions about your presentation quite well.  You handle both conversation topics quite well, sometimes giving extra information in your answers. OR You answer one conversation topic better 7/ than the other. 6  You give opinions.  You answer questions well, using past and future tenses. although you might make some mistakes what you say can be understood.  The tester doesn’t have to re-phrase the questions so that you can answer them.  You find it difficult to answer questions about your presentation, the tester does most of the work. 5/  You answer your conversation questions but give very simple answers and 4 make a lot of mistakes. The tester has to re-phrase a lot of questions so that you can answer them.  You only give some opinions and/or use different tenses infrequently.  You can’t answer questions about your presentation, the tester does most of 3/ the work.  You can’t really answer any of your conversation questions and make a lot of 2 mistakes.  What you say is not clear and you don’t give any opinions and/or use different tenses.  You don’t say anything that can be marked. 1/ (Don’t get into this situation, make sure you spend enough time 0 learning your conversation questions and always ask for help when you need it.)

5 Linguistic quality – (for whole examination except the presentation) 20 marks  You speak confidently and very accurately using of a variety of 20 tenses, structures and vocabulary.  You give long, detailed answers to open questions, only making a 19 few small errors in more complex language. What you need to prepare…  This is your chance to show off what you can do!  You speak for one minute on a topic of your choice.  You could use one of the sets of conversation questions you have prepared as the basis for your presentation or you could talk about something that really interests you – a sport or hobby that you do, fashion, sailing, Dr Who, cooking, Ferraris, dancing, Zac Efron, Kings of Leon, the X Factor and Jelly Babies are all topics that previous students have talked about.  You are allowed a cue card with five key words on it – no pictures allowed. (Make several versions of these, with less information/prompts on each card while you are learning your talk so that you gradually get used to speaking without much help.)  You will be asked two or three questions about your topic. Prepare three or four questions and answers that you think you could be asked in advance.  Always hand in a copy of your presentation to your teacher in advance to avoid disasters of the drinks leaking on it /left it on bus/little brother flushing it down loo/ mum on a clearout mission/ printer not working/deleted it from my memory stick variety.
