JOB DESCRIPTION: Title: Compost Technician Compensation: $60/week (5-7 hours per week) Supervisor: Patrick Pfeifer Duration: April 30- June 30 (9 weeks), with possible extension into the Fall Department: Office of Sustainability Number of Positions: 2 Application Deadline: April 10, 2012

Position Overview:

This student position seeks to actively bring the NAU community toward a more sustainable future through the means of composting and grassroots research. The Compost Technician will assist with the NAU-Composting pilot project as the first step in the development of a large-scale composting program at the University and in the greater Flagstaff Community. This collaborative project brings together campus and community partners, including but not limited to: Local FARE (Fostering Agricultural Research and Enterprise), the NAU Green Fund, the Velo-Composting Action Research Team, NAU Dining/Sodexo, Facilities Services/Capital Assets, and the NAU Office of Sustainability.

This position will report to Patrick Pfeifer (supervisor) and directly to the Office of Sustainability. This position will abide by the policies and codes of conduct as they pertain to the University and the Office of Sustainability.

Office of Sustainability Visions and Values The NAU Office of Sustainability is dedicated to coordinating, implementing, and reporting on sustainability strategies and initiatives, which help to support President Haeger's 2020 Carbon Neutrality Goal. We work collaboratively with local, national, and international partners to develop lasting initiatives that support the University's sustainability mission and improve the social, ecological, and economic environments that surround us. We are creating a culture of sustainability.

Primary Responsibilities:

 Work with a partner to pick up and deliver loads of food waste from NAU Dining Locations to the compost facility on South campus in a timely manner (~1 hour per day).  Loads of food waste will be picked up via bicycle and trailer and/or pickup truck.  Operate hand tools and monitoring equipment to monitor, and assist with maintenance of a large-scale compost system at the new NAU Compost Facility (Located on South Campus by the Solar Array)  Attend weekly compost team meetings as well as other meetings on an as needed basis  Garner interest in compost and sustainability  Work with other units and employees within NAU Dining/Sodexo, Facilities Management/Capital Assets, and in waste collection, monitoring, and documentation. All Crewmembers must adhere to the following requirements and important responsibilities during employment:

 Review, understand, and adhere to all University policies and procedures as well as those within your job description.  Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and trainings/pursue supplemental training.  Maintain personal attendance by Clocking- In/Out at time clocks and logging into shift reports as scheduled  Follow proper safety protocol, including proper dress and footwear for the job.  Actively solve problems, provide suggestions and input to supervisor.  Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisor. And work harmoniously with coworkers.  Complete all three sections of New Employee Orientation within three weeks of hire (see below). 1) Read the NAU Policies and Procedures Employee Handbook and take quiz online. 2) Complete “Preventing Sexual Harassment” online course and quiz. 3) Complete “NAU Defensive Driving” online course and quiz to be registered NAU Driver.

When Sick, follow this procedure:

Employees are expected to come to work as scheduled. You must notify your supervisor at least five hours prior to anticipated tardiness or absence, and it is your responsibility to find a substitute if you are unable to work a scheduled shift. It is the employee's responsibility to ask your supervisor if a longer notice time is required.

Any employee calling in late or sick must speak directly to a supervisor on the phone (note: that you may need your units supervisor’s personal phone number if unit is not open yet). Second party notification, phone messages, and emails are not considered proper notification, unless the employee was incapacitated (i.e. in the hospital).

Additional Information: This job description is not intended to limit, in any way, the right of supervisors to assign, direct and control the work of employees under their supervision. All employees should arrive fully prepared (i.e dressed and ready) at least five minutes before their shift, to read notices, and/or receive instructions. Unexcused absences, repeated tardiness, and excess absenteeism are subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination. Qualifications:

 Current Northern Arizona University student in good standing at Flagstaff Mountain Campus  Strong Interest in Campus Sustainability at the University  Ability to work well with other team members in a dynamic project environment  Ability to lift 50 lb. loads of food waste into a truck or bicycle trailer  Willingness to handle food waste and get dirty  Willingness to learn and regularly operate monitoring equipment  Careful documentation of research  Punctual, organized, and reliable  Clean driving record and willing to drive and/or ride a bicycle and trailer on the NAU campus.
