"Devemos mudar nossa maneira de ver — para chegar finalmente, talvez demasiado tarde, a mudar nossa maneira de sentir" (NIETZSCHE 2008, A 103) RESUMO O trabalho discute, por meio de método indutivo-descritivo, a hipotética existência de uma estética ecotécnica, dentro do horizonte das atuais discussões sobre sustentabilidade e resiliência. Em termos teóricos, compreende uma reflexão sobre a sua gênese, ponderando que ela seja o produto de uma comunhão entre os pensamentos tecnológico e ecológico. Em termos práticos, procura mapear não inovações, mas invenções em setores de infraestruturas, estruturas arquitetônicas e artemídias de cunho ecológico. A linha de investigação, portanto, engloba um amplo espectro estético, concentrando-se na produção de artistas, coletivos, teóricos de design e institutos acadêmicos envolvidos na pesquisa de suportes arquitetônicos vivos, redes autônomas de telecomunicações, sistemas computacionais não convencionais, eficiência energética, tecnologias de sensoriamento remoto de fenômenos naturais e revitalizações da chamada arte ecológica. Tem como objetivo geral proporcionar uma empatia com as técnicas low tech, sem subestimar os avanços tecnológicos da atualidade, mas preconizando o refreamento do uso intensivo de recursos, ou seja, a substituição da necessidade extensiva do crescimento econômico por um princípio de suficiência. Palavras-chave: artemídia, ecologia, estética, energias alternativas, resiliência tecnológica ABSTRACT The thesis discusses, through a inductive-descriptive method, the hypothetical existence of an ecotechnic aesthetics, within the horizon of the current discussions about sustainability and resilience. In theoretical terms, it comprises a reflection on its genesis, considering that it is the product of a communion between the technological and ecological thoughts. In practical terms, it seeks to map not innovations, but inventions in sectors of infrastructure, architectural structures and media art expressions of ecological nature. The research line therefore encompasses a broad aesthetic spectrum, focusing on the production of artists, collectives, design theorists and academic institutes involved in the research of living architectural supports, autonomous telecommunication networks, unconventional computating systems, energy efficiency, technologies of remote sensing of natural phenomena and revitalizations of so-called ecological art. Its general objective is to provide an empathy with low tech techniques, without underestimating the current technological advances, but recommending the retention of the intensive use of resources, or, in other words, the substitution of the extension necessity of economic growth for a principle of sufficiency. Brown, Richard Heinberg One of the counties within the province of sustainable development is now called “ecomodernism,” and it has come to prominence over the past few years, in part because of the figures associated with it, including prominent environmental thinkers such as Ted Nordhaus, Michael Shellenberger, and Stewart Brand. The New York Times recently praised the ecomodernist message in an article called, misleadingly, “A Call to Look Past Sustainable Development.”i Why is the article’s title so misleading? For the simple reason that the figures within ecomodernism want cultural and economic change that is sustainable, just like the rest of us; they simply want to move the focus of development in a new direction, even though this “new” direction seems surprisingly and troublingly conventional at times. The New York Times article mentions a new statement of principles that the ecomodernists published this year. It is called An Ecomodernist Manifesto (2015) and is co-authored by eighteen leading lights of the sustainability movement, including Nordhaus, Shellenberger, and Brand, but also the physicist David Keith, the scientist, Nobel Prize Winner, and Indian economist Joyashree Roy, and

Yet it remains unclear in practice how to legitimize its explicitly normative agenda. One potential means for legitimation can be found in deliberative social and political theory. We review how deliberative theory has informed ecological economics, pointing to three uses: first, to support valuation of non-market goods and services; second, to inform environmental decision-making more broadly; third, to ground alternative theories of development and wellbeing. We argue that deliberation has been used as problem-solving theory, but that its more radical implications have rarely been embraced. Embracing a deliberative foundation for ecological economics raises questions about the compatibility of deeply democratic practice and the normative discourses arguing for a sustainability transition. We highlight three potential mechanisms by which deliberation may contribute to a sustainability transition: preference formation; normative evaluation; and legitimation.

    ECOMODERNISM AND CLIMATE JUSTICE Mark Sagoff In April, 2015, a group of scholars, scientists, activists, and citizens published “An Ecomodernist Manifesto” to offer a vision of environmentalism for the Anthropocene (available online at www.ecomodernism.org). The Manifesto addressed the question how environmentalism as a political and intellectual program could remain viable in a geological era in which human beings, whether they like it or not, are the principal drivers of ecological change. While the term “Ecomodernism” was coined with a manifesto in 2015, it represented a collection of ideas which had emerged during the previous ten years particularly as a result of conferences, research papers, policy statements, congressional testimony, and the like developed at various think tanks, including the Breakthrough Institute, based in Oakland, California (see thebreakthrough.org). Ecomodernism is a work in progress. I speak only for myself, of course, as an Ecomodernist and not for Ecomodernism generally. This talk is divided into three parts. First, I introduce Ecomodernism. I discuss the response of Ecomodernism to the traditional or mainstream view among environmentalists that the Anthropocene represents a period in which humanity has transgressed or exceeded limits or boundaries planetary resources place on economic growth. Ecomodernism argues that the debate in the 1960s and 1970s between Malthusians, who predicted the collapse of civilization owing to resource scarcity, and technological optimists, who argued that the limits to knowledge are the only limits to growth, has been decided generally in favor of the latter, since standards of living globally have greatly improved over the last half century, while the dire predictions of the Malthusians, though regularly repeated, have not materialized.

The category sublime, when applied to the natural world, has long been associated in Western culture, with extremes of vastness and power. When encountered, that which is deemed sublime, by virtue of these qualities, has the effect of overwhelming the mind, such that it is thrown simultaneously into a state of astonishment, admiration and horror. We are both humbled and elevated by what we behold and momentarily struck dumb, such that, in its Kantian formulation, our appreciation of that which we take to be sublime, granted us through the powers of reason, has the effect of ennobling us, as moral beings.
