ABSTRACT

After attending a three day workshop on stigma related to HIV/AIDS where twenty five young people (fifteen from Kibera and ten from Makadara) were trained on the same, it was clear that it is of imperative importance that as responsible youths we replicate the knowledge acquired to other young people. Therefore on the 12th July 2008 we created this awareness in Makadara Constituency.

INTRODUCTION

The one day workshop was hosted by the Makadara TASC members in Makadara Constituency at Jericho Social Hall on 12th July 2008.

The workshop brought together more than 20 youth groups and above 60 youths from Makadara. It was attended by the Kibera TASC members, Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS members and Makadara Constituency Development Fund Youth Representative.

Together Against Stigma Campaign is a strategy designed to create awareness on stigma related to HIV/AIDS since much has been said and done with regards to HIV/AIDS but very little on stigma.

The training focused on:  HIV/AIDS definition, modes of transmission and prevention.  Stigma definition and forms of stigma.  Manifestation of stigma.  Interventions to combating stigma.

WORSHOP OBJECTIVE

To sensitize the community on stigma with regards to HIV/AIDS and give ways and means of combating stigma.

OVERVIEW The function was started officially by the Makadara focal person Mr. Moses Oluchiri welcoming the youths to the workshop and elaborating to them the aim of the workshop. There after was a word of prayer and introductions followed. During this session the participants introduced themselves by saying their names, from which location they come from and which group they represent.

The participants were then required to give their expectations and the following were their expectations:  To acquire more knowledge on HIV/AIDS  Know what is stigma  Make new friends  Knowing Jericho  Lunch  Knowing their status  Know how to stay with HIV positive people  Allowance

After the introductions the task coordinator Ms. Christabell Opudo of Stay Alive Youth Group was introduced to share the background of the project.

PRESENTATIONS

The first presentation on introduction to HIVAIDS and modes of transmission was done by Ms. Rukia Ahmed and Mr. Ali Osman. The session was interactive.

Our guest the Makadara Constituency Development Fund Youth representative Mr. Laban Kuria was thereafter introduced and he talked about the youth development fund and how the young people can benefit and manage the fund. He also said that he was willing to assist on any youth programmes that take place.

Mr. Ronnie Oyosi and Ms. Celestine Dottie took over from there and talked about stigma: its definition and forms of stigma.

There was a 45 minutes refreshment break and after resuming the welfare officer Ms.Muthoki was welcomed. She was proud of the young people who participated in this program. She encouraged them to continue with the same spirit and that she was willing to support the makadara youths by having the hall for free in their future activities. She was happy with the Kibera facilitators and she requested them to come back again.

The Final session and round up was concluded by Juliet. And vote of thanks given by Mr. Martin Odhiambo.

The participants came up with the following plan of action:  Proper mobilization suggested by a member of Oakland Youth Group.  Organizing an outreach program to schools during vacation/school holidays.  Use of posters  Having focus groups by every group that participated sharing the information with the rest of the community.  Identifying the issues that affect the youth’s e.g. HIV/AIDS, drugs, alcohol.  Explore new activities like roadshows.

Hi CONCLUSION The session was interactive and successful; it was well received by the participants and the community at large. The knowledge acquired will go along way in changing the lives of many by among other things encouraging positive behavioral change.

RECOMMENDATIONS

While advertising a lot of emphasis should also be put on time management because we wasted a lot of time waiting for the participants. That made us to start late.

One day is not enough to talk about stigma related to HIV/AIDS. We should have at least three days.

Apart from refreshments lunch should also have been provided since the session went on till after lunch.

It is of importance that fare should have been given especially to those participants that were living far from the venue or rather in other wards. This made us to have few or no participants from other wards.
