Union Poster Project: Standard: Explain the formation and goals of unions during the Industrial Era. A. the Knights of Labor B. the American Federation of Labor headed by Samuel Gompers
SWBAT: Create a recruitment poster to demonstrate an understanding of the role a Union played at the turn of the 20th century in industrial America
Students may work in PAIRS Project: Make a recruitment [sign-up] poster for 1 of the Unions studied: Knights of Labor -or- American Federation of Labor
Use your class notes to include the following on the poster: 1. Name of Union [w/ logo] 2. Name of Union Leader [w/ photo] 3. Worker types welcomed to join the Union [find pictures in magazines of candidates] 4. Worker types not welcomed in the Union [find pictures in magazines of rejects] 5. Role played by the Union for the Workers [5 to 6 goals the Union wants to achieve for workers] 6. Reason for Union to organize [means of to attaining goals – boycotts, etc.] 7. A success of the Union [Brag about it]
Directions: 1. Cut out the logo and photo of the Union Leader you are choosing for the poster. 2. Create Nameplate and a slogan for your recruitment poster 3. Outline a rough draft of the organization of the poster: a. - what do you want to put on the poster b. - where do you want to put the words and illustrations 4. Get the outline approved 5. Find magazine illustrations of workers who can or cannot join the union 6. Cut out any graphics, words, or appropriate illustrations for your poster 7. Using lined paper write out the information needed on the poster 8. Place the slogan, illustration of the logo and leader, written goals on lined paper & members welcome and not welcomed with illustration[s], & brag line 9. Use pencil to label where needed 10. Get approved before using markers and gluing down the poster 11. Complete the poster
