  • Discography of the Mainstream Label
Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021)
Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Please send any additions, corrections or comments to http://gc-pepperadamsblog.blogspot.com/, despite the content of the current blog post. Addition: OLIVER SHEARER 470900 September 1947, unissued demo recording, United Sound Studios, Detroit: Willie Wells tp; Pepper Adams cl; Tommy Flanagan p; Oliver Shearer vib, voc*; Charles Burrell b; Patt Popp voc.^ a Shearer Madness (Ow!) b Medley: Stairway to the Stars A Hundred Years from Today*^ Correction: 490900A Fall 1949 The recording was made in late 1949 because it was reviewed in the December 17, 1949 issue of Billboard.

  • Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. • Lady Marmalade”—Labelle (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Adele Bertei (Guest Post)*
“Lady Marmalade”—Labelle (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Adele Bertei (guest post)* Labelle Labelle. Hear the name and most will immediately think of Patti LaBelle, diva supreme, but the story is far more profound than the connection suggests. Over the course of 16 years together, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, and Patti LaBelle created a musical legacy unlike any other group before or since. Patti’s incredible voice led the way, undoubtedly. But it was Sarah Dash’s sweet soaring soprano, the deep resonance of Nona Hendryx’s voice and lyrical imagination, and the utopian vision of manager Vicki Wickham that would ultimately result in the creation of the Labellian cosmology--a map of sonic starlight. In 1962, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were a traditional girl group with a few minor hits. Ten years later, they dropped the girl group tropes and became Labelle, reinventing the role of Black women in popular music as bona fide rock stars in 1974. The torque accelerating their ascendancy was a song called “Lady Marmalade.” Co-written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, “Lady Marmalade” is the story of a Creole sex worker strutting a solicitation--”Voulez vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?”--a phrase that became a French-language primer for every American in love with pop music. Any record company trepidation about presenting this brazen shout-out for Black women’s sexual agency to the listening world was extinguished by the undeniable brilliance of the recording. The song might not have been written by Labelle, but their delivery made it a worldwide sensation.

  • What Does “The Ukulele Lady,” a Songwriter, and “The Babe” All Have
What does “The Ukulele Lady,” a songwriter, and “The Babe” all have in common with Asbury Park? here are those who view history as a timeline—one event leading directly into another without diversion: “Time marches on!” Then Tthere are others, like myself, who see it as a branching, web-like organic thing—a variety of unexpected contacts and off-beat juxtapositions uniting a variety of people and events. This is especially characteristic of the history of cities, where people, diverse, yet similar, dwell within close proximity and live overlapping lives. And so it is with my city, Asbury Park, where one story always leads to another (and another...). Perhaps the constant rhythm of the waves on the shore destined Asbury Park to be a destination for music. Founded as a seaside resort by Methodist convert James Bradley in 1871, in its earliest days, only music of a religious nature was permitted. As its popularity grew, visitors demanded greater variety in their music, so concert bands with their wide repertories came into favor. John Philip Sousa was the best known leader of this type of ensemble; he and his band performed next door in Ocean Grove thirteen times between 1910 and 1926. The lead trombonist with the Sousa Band was Arthur Pryor (1870-1942) who left Sousa and debuted his own band in 1903. He first played in Asbury Park in 1904, and was so popular that the Arthur Pryor Band performed there yearly through 1930, performing sixty concerts each summer. Pryor popularized Ragtime music in the area, and was also a composer of songs.
