Fact Sheet: National Education Gaming Championship 2015 Fact Sheet: National Education Gaming Championship 2015 28 Jun 2015 What is the National Education Gaming Championship (NEGC)? The NEGC is an inter-school gaming competition organised by the Ministry of Defence and supported by the Ministry of Education. It offers students an opportunity to learn about the 3rd Generation Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and its capabilities in a fun and engaging way. First organised in 2010, this is the fifth NEGC. What is the official game used in NEGC? Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2) is the official game used in the NEGC, and is currently used by the SAF for training. VBS2 provides a virtual environment for players to go through a wide range of military scenarios from a first-person shooter perspective. The players will get to try out many weapons used in the SAF, such as the Singapore Assault Rifle 21, Section Automatic Weapon, General Purpose Machine Gun and Man-portable Anti- Tank, Anti-DooR (MATADOR). Apart from the SAF, VBS2 is currently used by other militaries including the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps, the Australian Defence Force, and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence for mission rehearsal, tactical training and simulated combined arms exercises. Why is NEGC being organised? NEGC is an engaging way for youths to find out about the SAF and its capabilities, ranging from what it takes to be a fighting fit soldier to the technological capabilities of the 3rd Generation SAF. Through playing VBS2, participants not only have fun but learn that teamwork, having a healthy competitive spirit and fulfilling their 1 individual roles are key factors in winning the game. Participants also grow to appreciate that you cannot own what you cannot defend. Additionally, the competition is a positive platform for youths to make new like-minded friends while taking a break from school work during the June holidays. What are the Prizes for NEGC? 1st prize S$1500, Challenge Trophy, School Trophy & Individual Medals 2nd prize S$750, School Trophy & Individual Medals 3rd prize S$250, School Trophy & Individual Medals What are the key dates in the competition? 15 to 19 June 2015 Training Sessions 26 to 27 June 2015 Preliminaries 28 June 2015 Finals Who can compete? NEGC is open to all Secondary School, ITE, Junior College/Centralised Institute/Integrated Programme and Polytechnic students. All participating teams are required to undergo a four-hour training session which covers the following topics: • How to play VBS2 • The importance of defence and the SAF's role in keeping Singapore safe and secure • Working together as a team • Leadership skills What is the Team Composition for competing in NEGC? Schools must form a team of 10 members in order to compete. Each member will take up a specific role within a reinforced "Infantry Section" that includes the Platoon Commander, the Platoon Sergeant and the Combat Medic. Only a single team is allowed to participate from each school. Is there a code of conduct that teams must observe during the competition? Apart from the rules of the game and competition, teams are reminded that behaviour that amounts to unfair play and conduct signifying lack of sportsmanship could result in disqualification. These include: 2 • Use of any hacking software. • Provocative, offensive, threatening or vulgar/lewd conduct to other competitors, organisers and/or members of the public. How does a team win? During each round, each team will either attack or defend a target building. The round is won by either eliminating the opponent's team, or capturing/defending the building within a time limit. Teams will have to play both the defending and attacking roles in a match. The team that wins the most number of rounds wins the match. Can members of the public participate in this championship? Members of the public are invited to visit the NEGC Preliminaries and Finals held at ITE College Central from 26 to 28 June 2015. Held alongside Campus Game Fest (CGF), visitors will also get to see the SAF50 roving exhibition that will showcase the history of the SAF, as well as stories of individuals and agencies that have played a part in Singapore's defence. Collectively, the exhibition tells the SAF story over the last 50 years. More information on SAF50 and CGF can be found on www.saf50years.sg and www.campusgamefest.org respectively.     ITE AND SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB INK WORK-BASED PARTNERSHIP Provide hands-on work experience for career head-start World-class destination and staff to help students learn and grow First partnership with post-secondary education institution Singapore, 17 March 2015 – Singapore Sports Hub (SSH) and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see Singapore Sports Hub provide practical working experience and hands-on learning opportunities to ITE students of all three ITE Colleges. The partnership is the first of its kind to provide students with training and industry experience to develop competencies in sports and recreation management, through a series of internship opportunities at the Singapore Sports Hub. This is aligned with SkillsFuture, as the close partnership will give students work experience and mentorship to enhance mastery of skills to prepare them for their careers. The enrolment of students began in October 2014, however today represents the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. As part of the three-year agreement, SSH will work closely with ITE to identify and provide opportunities in event management, sports and recreation management, customer service, business, hospitality operations for ITE staff and students to participate in. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr Philippe Collin Delavaud, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Sports Hub, and Mr Bruce Poh, Director and Chief Executive Officer of ITE, and witnessed by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. “We feel privileged to be forging this new partnership with ITE today.     PARTICIPATIVE LEARNING WITH G-SCANNER AND iDE'LITE Mrs Wong-Tay Buay Kee SH/ICT/CW-BR Mr Lee Tse Yew LT/ICT/CW-BR Proceedings of the 5th International CDIO Conference, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore, June 7 - 10, 2009 ABSTRACT Participative learning enables students to actively shape and share their learning experience, in achieving the goals of reflection and transformation. The learning process is accelerated through e-learning as students are able to learn better with audio and visual multimedia elements. Some problems do arise with e-learning that was not present in textbook learning though. They are: e-learning navigation are not intuitive; students are lost in the maze of information, students losing attentiveness and concentration after staring at the computer monitor too long, students are unable to link up the information properly with the topics and sub-topics. Most students prefer a handy hardcopy textbook for quick overview and reference. Staffs from the Info-Comm Technology Department of ITE College West have created a technology enabled “Interactive Book” concept to capitalize on the advantages and eliminate the problems. Students are able to draw out internet or movie from the text or picture prints in their textbooks by pointing it with an electronic device called a G-Scanner with software application which the dept has created to provide the interface on the computer. By pointing the G-Scanner on any text or diagram in the booklet and the computer will retrieve and display the multimedia explanation. For practical sessions, students are able to log into a web portal known as iDe’Lite.

    Embargoed till 19 September 2010, 6pm PRESS RELEASE 13 September 2010 EMBARGOED TILL 19 SEPTEMBER 2010, 6PM Recognising School Achievements in 2010 Three schools are awarded both the pinnacle School Excellence Award for educational excellence and the Best Practice Award for Student All Round Development for holistic development of their students under the Ministry of Education (MOE) Masterplan of Awards (MoA)1 2010. The three schools are St. Hilda’s Primary, Chung Cheng High (Main) and Dunman Secondary. In addition to the two awards, Dunman Secondary is also conferred the Outstanding Development Award for Character Development this year. A total of 225 schools will receive 467 Special2 and Level Two3 Awards under the MoA. These awards will be presented to the schools at the 2010 MOE Work Plan Seminar on 23 September 2010 by Minister for Education, Dr Ng Eng Hen. 2. This press release provides information on the following: A. Award Recipients under the MoA. The award recipients comprise schools that have attained commendable achievements in various categories, including those with exemplary processes as well as excellent outcomes in both academic and non-academic areas. Information on the 2010 award recipients is provided in the Honour Roll. Information on all Special and Level Two Award recipients is also provided. B. School Achievement Tables. The tables highlight the achievements of secondary schools in the academic and non-academic domains. A. Masterplan of Awards 3. The MoA recognises schools’ efforts in providing students with a holistic education to enable them to achieve the Desired Outcomes of Education. The awards in MoA serve as milestone checks to guide schools on their excellence journey by providing them with a systematic and progressive framework to chart their own progress through benchmarking and making continuous improvement.

    National Olympiad in Informatics Fact Sheet National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) is part of the National Infocomm Competition 2010 (NIC) under the Secondary School and Junior College Circuits. Synopsis of Competition The National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) is an annual competition organised by the School of Computing (SoC), National University of Singapore, since 1998. It is modelled after the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), the ultimate international competition in computing. (Informatics is the European term for computer science.) NOI emphasises creativity in problem solving on the one hand, and programming skill and expertise on the other. NOI consists of a four-and-a-half hour session in which each contestant is required to individually solve and program a solution to each of the five to seven programming tasks. The solutions are judged according to their correctness (i.e., whether they produce the correct answers) as well as their speed of execution (i.e., producing the answers within a time limit). The actual time spent on programming is not taken into account in the evaluation. Each contestant works on a PC and is given a choice of programming language (Pascal, C or C++) to use. Target Audience This challenge is open to the secondary schools and junior colleges. Each school may register at most 5 students. Scoring system The judging system is automated. Every task (problem) contains a number of test data sets. Each submitted program is run by the judging system, and its output, to be generated within a time limit, compared with the correct answer. Each task has a maximum score of 100.
