Welcome Students and Families. I am pleased that you will be joining me in Microsoft IT Academy for Excel and Access this semester.

Course Goal Students in Microsoft IT Academies benefit from world-class Microsoft curriculum and cutting edge software tools to tackle real-world challenges in the classroom environment. The first part of the class is designed to help you use the newest version of Microsoft Excel interface, commands, and features to present, analyze, and manipulate various types of data. Students will learn to manage workbooks as well as how to manage, manipulate, and format data. In the second part of the class, students will learn how to create and work with a database and its objects by using the new and improved features in newest version of Microsoft Access. Students will learn how to create, modify, and locate information as well as how to create programmable elements and share and distribute database information.

Procedures. Students are expected to abide by all WSFCS and West Forsyth Rules/Procedures and the attached Business Lab Rules/Procedures. We will use headphones many weeks in this class. Headphones are provided; however you may wish to bring inexpensive headphones of your own. We are using Windows XP and Office 2010. A flash drive will be handy if you must carry work from school to home, but not mandatory for this class.

Materials needed.  A 1” 3-ring binder with pockets. Numerous handouts will be given with holes punched for your convenience. The better organized you are, the better student you will be. It is a good idea to keep your notes for each unit so you can use them to study for the mid-term and final exams. Pen or pencil may also be needed each day.  Personal ear buds or headsets can be used as needed, but will also be available in the classroom.

Attendance, Tardy and Makeup. All WSFCS and West Forsyth attendance and tardy policies apply in this course. Makeup work can be scheduled before or after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:15 a.m. until 8:40 a.m. or 3:40 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please make an appointment for makeup within one week of absence. (Mondays are reserved for faculty meetings.)

Grading. Grades will be updated in the Parent Assistant Module according to the county-wide progress reports schedule on the following dates: September 11, October 2, October 23, November 19, December 4, December 18, January 8, February 5, February 26, March 19, April 23, May 7, May 28. Report cards will be given to students at the end of each quarter. Grades are calculated as follows:  Quizzes and Daily Work/Performance Exercises – 25 - 100 points  Tests – Percentage of correct answers out of 100 points (for example, 8 correct questions out of 10 scores 80 out of 100 points).  Projects – 100 - 200 points

The final exam in June will cover the entire second semester. All students will also take two online performance tests in an effort to become certified in Microsoft Excel and Access 2010.

Final Exam. Students must complete a 100 question Vocats state exam. This will be used as your final exam grade and is required. This exam counts 25% of your course grade. There are no exemptions from this state exam.
