The Evidence Based Practices Policy Team

ECM NETWORK MEETING NOTES – JANUARY 6, 2005

The Evidence Based Practices Policy Team: In response to the Network’s proposal to the Policy Team that it sponsor an ECM Training for Trainers, the Policy Team is including that in its larger discussion of whether the 3 probation delivery systems and correctional facilities will start a collaborative training venture.

ECM Master Trainers: At the Network’s request (through Sue Stacey) Marilyn Van Dieten sent Sue a proposal for development of ECM Master Trainers. The requirements are very extensive (including folks first getting certified as Motivational Interviewing trainers) and seem impractical for now.

LSI-R and YLS/CMI Blended Learning Courses: YLS/CMI and LSI-R trainers, Sue Stacey and Mary Oberstar (DOC Employee Development curriculum designer) report that their work to develop blended learning (online + classroom portions) versions of the basic LSI-R and YLS/CMI courses are going very well!

Curriculum Revision: Review and discussion of Sue Eck Maahs’s revision of Katie Kennedy, Sam Summers and John Smith case studies, Conceptualization Wheels for YLS and LSI-R, and development of an LSI-R score sheet for John Smith. (YAY, SUE!!!)

Eric, Michael and Swantje will develop a YLS/CMI score sheet for Katie Kennedy and will doublecheck Sam Smith’s score sheet.

Videos: John’s looking for the Super 8 original of his interview tape with Eric (“Johnny Walker and Jack Daniels”) and has a VHS copy to make copies from, if nothing else. We’d like to make a good quality tape of the Katie Kennedy interview (with an adult playing Katie) for the trainers to use.

We’re very close to being done with the curriculum revision. When we’re done we’ll send it to Marilyn Van Dieten and ask her to make a phone meeting appointment with the Network to walk through the changes after she’s had a chance to look at them.

If possible before the next meeting, please look at the revised materials and come ready to finish it – Yay!

Note from Previous Meeting Notes: Julie was going to e-mail Dr. Bonta about a scoring question: we concluded that if a violent incident is admitted by an offender but not documented by any official agencies (e.g., criminal justice or school), then the agent or casemanager should not count that incident in “recorded incidences of violence” on #10. We’re wondering if Dr. Bonta has a different view of that.

1 Parking Lot Issue: Develop a “ECM 101” Presentation? No new thoughts about the possibility of developing a few hours long “ECM 101” presentation, like the Cognitive Behavioral Network has developed a “Cog 101” presentation, to be used to help overcome staff resistance to using Effective Case Management techniques. The presentation would describe to probation agents and facility case managers the benefits of using ECM.

Reminder: 2005 ECM Network Meetings: Conclusion: Meeting in St. Cloud and St. Paul could encourage more people to participate. Greg Boelter will host the St. Cloud meetings. Please calendar all 4 of the Network’s 2005 meetings and plan to attend (Becky – no Mon.s or Tues.s!): February 10, 2005 – DOC (St. Paul) – Pung 3 May 12, 2005 – St. Cloud August 11, 2005 – DOC (St. Paul) – Pung 3 November 3, 2005 – St. Cloud

NEXT MEETING: Thursday, December 20, 2004, 9:30am until 12:30pm, Department of Corrections central office (St. Paul), Pung 3. to finish the curriculum revision!

AGENDA:  Proposal from Offender Risk Assessment Network  Finish the curriculum revision!  Parking Lot Issues: o Decide whether or not to develop: ECM 101, separate case planning training (1 day?) and/or booster trainings o Discuss possible webpage of ECM research literature or cites – perhaps with student research help?
