Chair Report/ LCDR Scott Klimp PAPAG Chair report:

Subcommittee Reports

Awards Subcommittee- CAPT George Carter/CDR Janet Valdez The Award Subcommittee is planning to conduct a teleconference to discuss some ideas for improvement, list of potential PHS awards applicable to our group and to do a presentation on writing awards. Hopefully, we can give updates in next meeting.

Communications Subcommittee- CDR Stephen Keller/LCDR Jim Reid LCDR Reid is looking into PAPAG participation in the National Prevention Strategy (NPS) Spotlight with the venture to specify health topics/activities promoted by Health Service officers and their respective PAGs in advancing the mission of the U.S. Public Health Service. This would entail writing small articles on this topic to be included in the HSO Weekly.

Membership Subcommittee-LT Tracy Sanchez The membership application has been updated on the website and the due date for submission is on Oct 31, 2013.

Policy and Procedure Subcommittee- CDR Paul Hager/CDR Joe Morris No updates.

Professional Development Subcommittee- CDR Anthony Bryant The committee is still in the process of compiling a list of educational resources and will plan on presentation about Advance Degree programs.

Readiness Subcommittee- CDR Josef Rivero/LCDR Dan Goldstein We were able to obtain the quarterly readiness HSO list from DCCPR for June 30, 2013. The list of physician assistants in the USPHS was compared to the HSO list, and it was determined there were 27 PAs who were not basic ready, which is the same amount of PAs who were not qualified with the March 31, 2013, readiness check. Twelve (12) of the PAs who were not qualified in March were now basic ready for June; however, several officers who were basic ready in March were not qualified in June. The most common reason why officers were not qualified is because of an expired/missing BLS certification and the annual physical fitness test. Eleven (11) of the names of PAs on the list of physician assistants in the USPHS could not be found on the quarterly readiness HSO list. It is likely these PAs have either separated or retired from the commissioned corps. The total number of PAs in the USPHS at present is approximately 161.

The readiness subcommittee members will contact the 27 PAs who were not basic ready on June 30, 2013, by email or phone. There are 8 PAs who have been not qualified for 3 consecutive quarters dating back to December 31, 2012; these PAs will be contacted by phone. We will also work on trying to contact the 11 PAs whose names do not appear on the HSO readiness list. Our goal is to have at least 95% of all PAs basic ready each quarter.

Recruitment and Retention Subcommittee-CDR Matthew Zagula/ LT James McLellan No updates.

Welcoming Subcommittee-LCDR Candace Been/LCDR Paul Licata

Ad Hoc COF Subcommittee/ CDR Pelkey No updates.

Ad Hoc AMSUS Subcommittee/ CAPT Cole Reminder: AMSUS is still planned for November 3 through November 8, 2013, in Seattle, WA The format for AMSUS breakout session has been changed to consolidation format. USPHS is leading the conference.
