Fairfax Food Council – Community Garden Project APPLICATION 2017

The Fairfax Food Council is a coalition representing government, non-profit agencies, business sector, faith based community and concerned citizens. At the heart of the Council’s mission, is the promotion of collaborative efforts that seek to address food inequities and promote a healthier population in Fairfax County. The Fairfax Food Council, through a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, is seeking to find community partners and/or community focused organizations interested in establishing a community garden project to increase the availability of healthy and affordable food in one of three designated communities - Bailey’s Crossroads/Culmore, Mount Vernon and Herndon/Reston. Small financial assistance awards will be provided to successful applicants to establish or expand an existing garden project that will incorporate one or more of the Community Garden Project criteria and priorities listed below. Applicants may be awarded up to $400 for supplies needed for their proposed Community Garden Project. Possibly more financial assistance will be provided should additional funds be made available to the Fairfax Food Council. Purchases made through this award will be coordinated through the Fairfax Food Council.

All applicants, awardees and non-awardees, will be offered free garden workshops as well as garden discussion and network opportunities during the award year.

Organizations interested in applying for the Community Garden Project financial assistance for project supplies are to complete this application and submit by March 1, 2017. Notification of Community Garden Project financial assistance awards will be provided no later than March 30, 2017.

Application Information Session and Garden Workshops: “Planning, Planting & Maintaining Edible Gardens” workshop will be held January 31, 2017 in conjunction with a “Community Garden Project Application Information” session. The workshop and session will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Mott Community Center, 12111 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. The snow date is scheduled for February 7, 2016. Future workshops are scheduled for the evenings of March 28, May 23, July 25, August 29, and September 26, of 2017. Application Eligibility Criteria:  Gardens must be located in the following communities/zip codes: Bailey’s Crossroads /Culmore - (zip codes 22041, 22042, 22043, 22044) Mount Vernon - (zip codes 22306, 22309) Reston/Herndon - (zip codes 20170, 20171, 20190, 20191)  Gardens should focus on healthy eating for children, youth and families  Garden projects are to include one or more of the following elements: 1) train families and children in garden planning, implementation and maintenance; 2) provide families with garden produce; 3) provide food preparation and food tasting events; and/or 4) provide nutrition education.  Garden projects must include a garden committee for garden development, maintenance and management.  Gardens must be planted in the 2017 planting season.

Application Priorities:

Priority will be given to proposed Community Garden Projects that emphasize one or more of the following elements:

 Addressing healthy eating  Sustaining/maintaining the garden throughout the entire growing season, particularly summer months  Value to the community
