The PAH levels were generally low over the year; however, the PAH concentrations increased according to one of two seasonal trends, which were either an increase in PAHs during the cold period, influenced by heating, or a PAH enrichment during the wet period due to higher run-off inputs. The major PAH source was the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, but a minor input of petrogenic PAHs in some seasons was observed. Higher PAH concentrations were observed in fresh and brackish water compared to the saline waters in the Tumen River estuary, while the PAH concentrations in both types of water were similar in the Partizanskaya River estuary, suggesting different pathways of PAH input into the estuaries. -

The 4 Luanhe River Delta (northwest coast of Bohai Sea, China) is characterized by the 5 distribution of saline, brine, brackish and fresh groundwater, from coastline to inland, 6 with a wide range of total dissolved solids (TDS) between 0.38–125.9 g L-1. 7 Meanwhile, previous studies have revealed that this area was significantly affected by 8 Holocene marine transgression. In this study, we used hydrochemical, isotopic, and 9 sedimentological methods to investigate groundwater salinization processes in the 10 Luanhe River Delta and its links to the palaeo-environmental settings. -

In these countries and to a certain extent in some least developed countries there is a substantial interest to develop new IBWTs. IBWTs are being applied or developed not only for irrigated agriculture and hydropower, but also for municipal and industrial water supply, flood management, flow augmentation (increasing flow within a certain river reach or canal for a certain purpose), and in a few cases for navigation, mining, recreation, drainage, wildlife, pollution control, log transport, or estuary improvement. Debates on the pros and cons of such transfers are on going at National and International level. New ideas and concepts on the viabilities and constraints of IBWTs are being presented and deliberated in various fora. In light of this the Central Office of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) has attempted a compilation covering the existing and proposed IBWT schemes all over the world, to the extent of data availability. The first version of the compilation was presented on the occasion of the 54th International Executive Council Meeting of ICID in Montpellier, France, 14 - 19 September 2003. -

As one of the most important economic regions in China, the coast of the Yangtze Delta has been showing a trend towards erosion with global warming and the increasing human activities in the catchment and its estuary. Currently, most published studies about coastal erosion in the area focused on the causes and types of erosion. This paper presents a Decision Support Framework (DSF) for the risk assessment of coastal erosion in consideration of the potential management problems and challenges for economic development in the coastal zone of the Yangtze Delta. The framework consists of four major components: integrated database, GIS-based risk assessment models, scenarios generator and visualization toolkit. Especially, we developed a GIS-based risk assessment model for the muddy coasts of Yangtze Delta. An Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, which is instrumental in combining computer intelligence and experts’ knowledge, was used to weight the variables of the model. -

ON THE ROAD TO A MODERN CITY: NEW TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY AND URBAN TRANSFORMATION OF TIANJIN, 1860-1937 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Kan Li IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Liping Wang, Ann Waltner June 2020 © Kan Li 2020 Abstract After the northern Chinese city of Tianjin was opened as a treaty port in 1860, the steamship, railroad, and electric tramway were introduced into the city in rapid succession. The adoption of modern transportation technologies enabled Tianjin to occupy a crucial position in the emerging national and global transport and trade networks, Tianjin thus became one of a few cities that made the transition from a traditional commercial city on the Grand Canal to a modern seaport and railroad hub. Instead of taking a city’s modernity for granted, this dissertation examines how the physical forms of modernity came into being in Tianjin by connecting these processes to the adoption of new technologies and the building of national and international networks of transportation. Studying Tianjin from this angle, this dissertation sheds light on why, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a select few cities thrived even as China as a whole was struggling economically and politically. While fundamentally transforming Tianjin’s status, these new transport technologies also led to unintended consequences, which revealed the contingencies in modernization and the complexity of the Chinese modernity. In order to make the port of Tianjin a high-capacity, reliable harbor for large steamships, the river connecting Tianjin with the sea was drastically reshaped during the first two decades of the twentieth century. -

Climate Variability and Human Activities in Relation to Northeast Asian Land-Ocean Interactions and Their Implications for Coastal Management 2005-05-CMY-Adrianov Final Report submitted to APN ©Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research, 2006 Overview of project work and outcomes Summary In course of the 2-year APN-funded project, new data on estuarine and coastal changes in areas adjoining the Amur, Tumen and Razdolnaya Rivers were obtained, and recommendations for management of sustainable coastal development of the region are presented including China and Korea coastal zones. Two expeditions to Amur and Razdolnaya Rivers mouth areas were orga- nized, and hydrological regime, oceanography, environmental contamination, state of benthic and plankton comminities were investigated in connection with climatic changes. Three workshops were held: in Nanjing, China, Dec. 2004; Training Course for Young Scientists, Vladivostok, Russia, Oct. 2005; back-to-back with a science session for local policy-makers; in Vladivostok, May 2006. A website of the project was created (http://www.imb.dvo.ru/misc/apn/index.htm), and two books, Ecological Studies and State of the Ecosystem of Amursky Bay and Razdolnaya River Mouth and a collective monograph are in preparation. Two books and 19 papers in peer- reviewed journals were published and/or prepared. Future directions may include comparison of different coastal management strategies and understanding of how we can use these national strategies to develop complex management approach. Objectives The main objectives of the project were: 1. to identify estuarine and coastal changes in terms of hydrology, hydrochemistry, geo- chemistry, geomorphology, ecosystem and material cycling patterns of the Northeastern Asia region, with special reference to the Amur, Tumen and Razdolnaya Rivers; 2.
