R. China Abstract: Based on field data of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and sediment in Nansi Lake. Based on two long-term, hourly (10:30–11:30 and 13:10–14:10) meteorological over-lake observations and data from Shenxian meteorological station, nearby Dongping Lake, the Penman-Monteith equation and reference evaporation ratio algorithm were used to calculate lake evaporation in Dongping Lake, China, from 2003 to 2010. The variation trend of evaporation of Dongping Lake was analyzed, and the influences that caused changes in lake evaporation were also discussed. The PAH levels were generally low over the year; however, the PAH concentrations increased according to one of two seasonal trends, which were either an increase in PAHs during the cold period, influenced by heating, or a PAH enrichment during the wet period due to higher run-off inputs. The major PAH source was the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, but a minor input of petrogenic PAHs in some seasons was observed. Higher PAH concentrations were observed in fresh and brackish water compared to the saline waters in the Tumen River estuary, while the PAH concentrations in both types of water were similar in the Partizanskaya River estuary, suggesting different pathways of PAH input into the estuaries. -

The 4 Luanhe River Delta (northwest coast of Bohai Sea, China) is characterized by the 5 distribution of saline, brine, brackish and fresh groundwater, from coastline to inland, 6 with a wide range of total dissolved solids (TDS) between 0.38–125.9 g L-1. 7 Meanwhile, previous studies have revealed that this area was significantly affected by 8 Holocene marine transgression. In this study, we used hydrochemical, isotopic, and 9 sedimentological methods to investigate groundwater salinization processes in the 10 Luanhe River Delta and its links to the palaeo-environmental settings. -

Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XV 297 INITIAL EXPLORATION OF A PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN HAINAN, CHINA WANG ZHENYU Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China ABSTRACT The long course of Chinese national history runs from a remote source. Since China has a vast territory, different regions formed a variety of regional cultures with different natural environments and era evolutions. Historical and cultural towns and villages not only exist as individual entities, but also as integrated urban and rural settlements and regional cultures. This paper presents the methodologies for the protection of historical towns and villages in the phase of systematic planning in Hainan Province. The research begin with looking at Hainan’s regional culture, adopting the research method of anthropology and regional heritage to retrace the culture of Hainan’s towns and villages, analysing the status quo, and on this basis, building a framework of Hainan historical towns and villages in promotion of its rational protection and development. Keywords: historical and cultural towns and villages, land use, Meso-scale space unit, non-motor- vehicle travel. 1 INTRODUCTION Hainan is a tropical island in southern China with beautiful scenery; its special natural environment has created an exotic culture. Today, most people see Hainan as an international scenic spot; however, less attention is paid to Hainan’s culture and traditions, which, to some extent, results in a lack of cultural construction. Historical and cultural villages and towns are important space carriers of Hainan culture; therefore, the construction of provincial-level historical and cultural towns and villages to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Hainan is essential. -

A distributed hydrological model (SWAT), which is widely used both domestically and internationally, was selected to quantitatively analyze the impact of land use and climate change on runoff in this paper in Dawen River Basin, China. The calibration and validation results obtained at Daicunba and Laiwu hydrological stations yield R2 values of 0.83 and 0.80 and 0.73 and 0.69 and the Ens values of 0.79 and 0.76 and 0.71 and 0.72, respectively. Taking 1980-1990 as the reference period, the annual runoff increased by 288 million m3, which was caused by changes in the land use of basin from 1991 to 2004, whereas the annual runoff decreased by 132 million m3 due to climate change. Land use changed from 2005 to 2015, which resulted in an increase in annual runoff of 13 million m3, and annual changes in climate caused a decrease in annual runoff of 61 million m3. An extreme land use scenario simulation analysis shows that, compared to the current land use simulation in 2000, the runoff of cultivated land scenarios and forest land scenarios was reduced by 38.3% and 19.8%, respectively, and the runoff of grassland scenarios increased by 4.3%. -

In many cities, the water quantity situation has become more and more serious, caused either by absolute water shortage or water pollution. Considering population growth and fast urbanization, ensuring adequate water supply with acceptable water quality is crucial to socio-economic development in the coming decades. In this context, one key point is to (re-)address various water problems in a more holistic way. This study explores the emerging water crisis events in Beijing Municipality so as to have a better understanding of water systems changes and to make more sustainable water-related decisions. The changes of water quantity and water quality in the region are analyzed in a systems perspective; and opportunities towards improved performance of Beijing‟s water systems are discussed. In order to aid in water systems analysis, a conceptual framework is developed, with a focus on identifying the most important interactions of the urban water sector. The results of the study show that the emerging water crisis events in the Beijing region are caused by a variety of inter-related factors, both external and internal. -
