Abstract This document contains the meeting minutes from the TGu Task Group teleconference held on March 2, 2005.

Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.11. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein.

Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.11.

Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures , including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at .

Recorded Attendees

Stephen McCann (Chair, TGu) Eleanor Hepworth Cheng Hong Sabine Demel Juan Carlos Zuniga Farooq Bari Mike Moreton (Partial)

Proceedings:

Chair opened the teleconference at 09:15 EST, following problems with the tele conference bridge. The Chair apologized to all concerned about this.

There were no objections to everyone being aware of IEEE –SA policies.

Discussion document 11-05-0141r0

Document was presented by the author Sabine Demel

Eleanor: A lot of the document text is probably not in scope for TGu (higher layer information). 2 specific areas are : 1) Network Discovery 2) Section 1.2.3, although what services are 3GPP trying to offer here. Sabine: This is addressing denial of service attacks. There maybe some restriction about WLAN users being able to route all of their traffic into the 3GPP domain. Chair: Which is router filtering. Eleanor: Another aspect is correlating authentication between layer 2 and layer 3

Cheng: This is also related to 3GPP tunnel filtering. It may be a layer 2 issue and hence it should be addressed within TGu. Sabine: Can we define a mechanism to prove that packets come from the real user? It is more than just a filter that we are talking about here. Some entity should stop user traffic at the access point. Eleanor: Can we take these requirements up a level? Could we define a higher layer requirement, of which 3GPP filtering is an example of one way of meeting the requirement. Chair: So, TGu can define a generic requirements of which 3GPP has a specific solution. Going back to section 1.2.3, it appears that IEEE 802.11 can (already?) receive a key from the external network and then apply it to the wireless connection.

Action : Compile scenario document, using previous contributions from WIEN SG, TGu and this document from Sabine.

Action : Add an agenda item to the Atlanta TGu meeting to address QoS mapping within the access point.

Conclusion to this presentation

This document can then be used as a basis for discussion within TGu at the Atlanta meeting, to create a more formal requirements document (e.g. 11-05-1583-00-wien-draft-functional-requirements-and- scope.doc).

This requirements document may then become part of a future liaison to 3GPP, 3GPP2, GSMA and other Interested external standards bodies, who have placed requirements on IEEE 802.11 technology for interworking.

Other Input Documents/Questions

Farooq: Can I ask a question about charging? Is it in scope for TGu ? Chair: This is still open to debate. I think at this stage, we should write down all the issues, perhaps in the Scenario document, and then discuss whether they are in scope or out of scope in Atlanta.

Sabine: What about the WiFi Alliance, are they not also addressing similar ideas as mentioned in Monterey ? Eleanor: Although they are, TGu can still address optimizations which directly affect IEEE 802.11 technology

Sabine: At some point can TGu address how to remove users from a session (e.g. graceful removal) Eleanor: This was touched on some time ago, within WIEN SG. Let’s re-visit this issue in Atlanta.

Editor Election

Sabine: Does TGu still want volunteers for some sort of editor? Chair: Thank you for the question. At some point, TGu will have to have a formal editor to draft the proposed output document from the group (i.e. amendment document). Although this formal position is not required at the moment, it would be useful to have an editor, to assist with the requirements document. Therefore I will now issue nominations for editor, which can be discussed during the Atlanta meeting. Sabine: I may be able to help out with this role.

Next Teleconference

Not discussed, this is on the agenda for the Atlanta meeting.
