______, ______Goals

1. Test all 3 water samples (Snow Mountain Ranch, Top of Canyon, Powerhouse Road) for Nitrate, Phosphate/Phosphorus, and Fecal Coliform contamination.

2. Test Bottom of Canyon water sample for Nitrate and Fecal Coliform contamination (you already did Phosphates on the Field Trip so just record that number in your graph).

3. Perform a literature review (online) to answer Nitrate, Phosphate, and Fecal Coliform questions.

4. Answer aquatic invertebrate questions.

5. Calculate flows at each field station.

6. Write up lab report. Outline to include: Title page, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Literature Cited, and Acknowledgements.

7. Peer review of each other’s lab reports.

Author: Melissa Reitz, Yakima WATERS Project, CWU, Fall 2010 Nitrate Questions

1. How do Nitrates get into the water? (hint: where do they come from?)

2. What is the maximum amount of Nitrates drinking water can have for the Environmental Protection Agency to consider it is still safe? (hint: how many milligrams of nitrates in 1 liter of water is safe to drink?)

3. What will high levels of Nitrates do to the human body? (hint: describe diseases or affects it will have on our health - don’t just list them.)

4. Please make a bar graph of Nitrate Levels at each field site.

Phosphate Questions

1. How do Phosphates/Phosphorus get into the water? (hint: where do they come from?)

2. What is the maximum amount of Phosphates/Phosphorus stream water can have for the Environmental Protection Agency to determine it is still “clean”? (hint: how many milligrams of phosphates in 1 liter of water is still considered “clean”?)

3. What will high levels of Phosphates/Phosphorus do to the human body? (hint: describe diseases or affects it will have on our health.)

4. Please make a bar graph Phosphates/Phosphorus Levels at each field site.
