UW HEALTH JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION SPECIFICS Title: Senior Business Operations Specialist, Department/Number: Pharmacy 1303 Medication Value Analysis Reports to: Pharmacy Manager, Information Position Number: PD Status: Technology and Medication Use Systems Job Code: 2769 FLSA Status: Exempt FTE: 1.0 Bargaining Unit: Non-Rep Manager Approval: J Temple 4-15 HR Approval: CMW 4-15 POSITION SUMMARY The Senior Business Operations Specialist, Medication Value Analysis works under the direction of the UW Health Department of Pharmacy and UW Health Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and is responsible for providing ad- hoc and ongoing reporting and analysis services related to the value (i.e. outcomes related to cost) of medication use across the UW Health enterprise. The incumbent reports to the Pharmacy Manager, Information Technology and Medication Use Systems, and has matrix responsibility to the Pharmacy Manager, Drug Policy Program and Patient Care Services, as well as the Business Planning and Analysis Department. This joint reporting relationship facilitates pharmacy business intelligence and data analytics to 1) focus on the needs of the UW Health Department of Pharmacy and UW Health Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee; 2) access, develop and maintain competence with, and receive guidance on the use of appropriate strategic information, data stores, and analytical products; and 3) collaborate with other data analysts and analysis projects across the enterprise.

Key responsibilities of the incumbent include the retrieval, organization, analysis and presentation of data related to medication utilization, purchasing and reimbursement in conjunction with quality and outcome data to support efforts to maximize medication-use value across UW Health. In addition, the incumbent will coordinate the comparative data analysis of medication value within UW Health to internal and external benchmarks. The incumbent is responsible for planning and leading projects related to EHR within operational areas of UW Health. This individual develops workflows, configures systems, documents changes, and trains staff on application functionality. The incumbent will also support the development and quality assurance of medication-related reporting to internal and external stakeholders. Lastly, the incumbent will support the data and analysis needs of the UW Health Department of Pharmacy and UW Health Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee leadership by identifying areas for medication- related cost reduction, efficiency and quality improvement, and revenue cycle enhancement.

In order to be successful in this position, the incumbent must have and further develop a strong command of the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SAS, SQL or similar data querying tools, SAP Crystal Reports, EPIC, and data warehouses. In addition, the position requires: creativity and innovative ability; initiative and accountability to internal and external customers; excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills; understanding of medication use systems across UW Health; an ability to develop collaborative relationships and partner with subject matter experts in various work units (e.g. patient care, finance, information services, quality); proficiency in modeling techniques, interpretive judgment skills, and presentation techniques to deliver actionable information and intelligence to decision makers; and a passion for using data to positively effect change.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Inpatient and Clinic Drug Budgeting and Forecasting  Develop monthly reports and analysis for pharmacy cost centers related to purchasing and utilization of medications  Utilize data from group purchasing organizations, clinical experts, service line directors, and hospital administration to forecast the budget impact of utilization and pricing changes  Develop reports to track the impact of value-based medication initiatives  Identify variation in resource utilization and potential drivers of the variance B. Service Line Reporting  Support medication-related quality, cost, and reimbursement reporting to UW Health Service Line Administrative and Medical Directors  Identify and/or monitor medication-related service line value management initiatives  Perform exploratory and targeted data analyses  Create and maintain medication-related benchmarking data C. Workflow Development and Documentation  Coordinate the planning and implementation of big data and analytics solutions  Work in technical teams in development, deployment, and application of data mining methods UW HEALTH JOB DESCRIPTION  Evaluate and recommend third-party solutions/products/services that may contribute to the overall efficient use of large data warehouses  Provide subject matter expertise and stay abreast of latest technologies to solve problems associated with business intelligence and analytics  Oversee the development and maintenance of data architectural standards in partnership with enterprise architecture group  Coordinate standards, policies, and best practices for data integrity and processes, and identifies tools to support the processes  Coordinate the research, design, development, testing, retrieval, and data reporting; utilizing the knowledge of various software packages  Ensure proper definition of data needs, evaluation of data quality, and critique appropriate statistical analyses; for critical projects, perform needed analyses  Utilizes a global understanding of how all systems function together within workflows and bases decisions and recommendations on this knowledge  Collects information from department end-users regarding potential enhancement needs and works with departmental teams to validate and prioritize these enhancements  Works with departmental staff to acquire an understanding of the underlying needs of the department and translates these needs into how the system should be built  Develops project plans and workflows  Assists operational leaders in implementing workflow changes  Responsible for ownership of workflow files and maintaining them as changes occur D. Application Building  Oversee the development of systems to integrate various data sources available throughout UW Health  Develop end-user platforms that would enhance the availability of appropriate data to decision-makers, including those outside the department of pharmacy  Configures applications according to use specifications  Prioritizes and implements changes requested for the system  Ensures upgrades are well coordinated and that they are implemented in a safe and timely manner  Analyzes new functionality in releases to determine whether or how it should be used E. UW School of Medicine and Public Health Department Reporting  Serve as a resource for Department Chairs and Vice-Chairs to develop value-based medication reports by diagnosis, clinic, service, provider group F. Revenue Cycle  Serve as a resource to evaluate and audit medication-related elements of the revenue cycle to optimize billing and reimbursement of inpatient and clinic-administered medications  Model the impact of payor contracts and site of care on medication-related reimbursement G. UW Health Department of Pharmacy and UW Health Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Reporting  Serve as a resource to provide ad-hoc and ongoing data queries to support medication use evaluations  Develop reports to support clinical managers in holding pharmacists accountable to P&T approved clinical practice guidelines and medication-related policies  Develop reports to support clinical managers in holding pharmacists accountable to CAMP approved clinical practice guidelines and medication-related policies  Serve as a resource to pharmacists, pharmacy coordinators, and pharmacy managers to develop ad- hoc and ongoing reports related to operations and/or scholarship H. Maintain Drug Policy Program databases and electronic resources  Maintain data integrity of relevant Drug Policy Program intranet pages and formulary management module  Lead the technical build and maintenance of smart infusion pump medication libraries I. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Education Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Information Systems, or closely related field. Preferred Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or other relevant field. Work Experience Minimum Two (2) years of professional experience in progressively advanced analytic and project leadership roles in healthcare or equivalent advanced education.
