Catalog Description This course is designed to provide insight into the coaching profession. It will examine the many facets of the area and provide suggested guidelines for prospective coaches to use in establishing their own style and methods of coaching.
Purpose of Course: This is a basic course in principles of coaching that can be used for an individual interested in coaching.
Course Objectives and Expected Outcomes: At the conclusion of this course, each student will be able to: 1. Identify the role of the head coach and the assistant coach. 2. Explain the qualities of a good coach. 3. Describe the nature of the coaching profession. 4. Gain an insight into the coach’s family life. 5. Describe methods of preparation for success in coaching. 6. Describe procedures for pre-season staff planning. 7. Explain the recruiting process. 8. Identify ethics in coaching. 9. Illustrate and understand issues and problems related to coaching.

Learning Experiences and Assessments Written Exam: students will reflect knowledge of various aspects of coaching.
Written Assignments: students will write critiques, position responsibilities, and player personality characteristics as it relates to coaching.
Class Discussion: students will discuss current issues relating to coaching.
Special Projects: students will be involved in projects of their choosing as it relates to coaching.

Grading Percentage Written exam 80% Written assignments 10% Class Discussion 10% Special Projects Extra Credit
A = 174-157, B = 156-139, C = 138-121, D = 120-103, E = 102
Field Experience: This may be part of the student’s Special Project.
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all classes. More than three absences will cause reductions in the class grade.
