JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible to: The Trustees, Local Governing Body and Executive Head

Responsible for: All staff within the academy

Introduction

The appointment is subject to conditions of employment for Headteachers as set out in the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document as agreed nationally and subject to review, and in accordance with any other current legislation as required in various Education Acts. In carrying out the duties, the Principal shall consult where appropriate, the governing body, the DFE and local authority, the staff of the academy and the parents of its pupils.

Core Purpose of the Principal

To provide professional leadership and management for the academy that promotes a secure foundation that will ensure its success and improvement, high quality education and successful outcomes in terms of educational achievement, moral growth, attitudes to learning, behaviour and personal development for all pupils.

Shaping The Future

 To work pro-actively at the academy and within the MAT structure to secure formal partnership arrangements enabling the academy to sustain rapid improvements.

 Able to build a coherent vision of excellence and distinctiveness for the academy and to ensure that the academy continues to improve.

 An inspirational leader, able to motivate and empower staff.

 Has experience of strategy formation and implementation in an academy or other appropriate setting.

 Ensure the vision for the academy is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon.

 Motivates and works within the community to create a shared culture.

 Ensure that learning is at the centre of strategic planning and resource management, enabling pupils to become enthusiastic, effective and independent learners.

 Has an excellent understanding of the national curriculum and statutory assessment arrangements.

 Has a solid understanding of the Foundation Stage/EYFS curriculum.

 Substantial experience of monitoring, evaluating, target setting, school improvement planning and curriculum leadership.

 Demonstrates and articulates high expectations and sets demanding targets for the whole academic community.

 Understands self-evaluation and its link with improvement and the Ofsted inspection process.

 Takes a strategic role in the development of new and emerging technologies to enhance and extend the learning experience of children.

 Monitors, evaluates and reviews classroom practice and challenges under performance.

Developing Self and Working with Others

 Maintain a positive school culture by treating people fairly, equitably and with dignity.

 Develop and maintain effective strategies and procedures for staff induction, professional development and performance review.

 Experience of developing individuals and teams in order to achieve personal and shared goals in the drive for improvement.

 Ensure clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities.

 Develop and maintain a culture of high expectation for self and others and take appropriate action when performance is unsatisfactory.

 Is an active learner who regularly reviews own practice and can show evidence of continuing professional development.

 Manages own workload and that of others to allow for appropriate work-life balance.

Managing the Organisation

 Work effectively to ensure the academies within the MAT are supported within a collaborative structure.

 Develop a structure which reflects the academy’s values and enables the management systems to work effectively in line with legal requirements.

 Ensure that within the MAT, there is an autonomous culture where practices and policies take into account national and local circumstances.  Recruit, retain and deploy staff appropriately and manage their workload to achieve the vision and goals of the academy.

 Implement successful performance management processes with all staff.

 Ensure that resources are monitored, evaluated and reviewed to improve the quality of education and provide value for money.

Securing Accountability

 Fulfils commitments arising from contractual accountability to the Governing Body and Trustees.

 Develop an academy ethos which enables everybody to work collaboratively and share knowledge.

 Ensures individual staff accountabilities are clearly defined, understood and agreed and are subject to rigorous review and evaluation.

 Understands and presents an accurate account of the academy’s performance to a range of audiences.

 Works with the Governing Body to enable it to meet its responsibilities.

Strengthening the Community

 Capitalise on the opportunities provided through a MAT in relation to staff, parents and governors.

 Create and promote positive strategies for challenging any form of prejudice or harassment.

 Collaborate with other agencies to provide for the academic, spiritual, normal, social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of pupils and their families.

 Seek opportunities to invite parents, carers, community figures, businesses or other organisations into the academy to enhance and enrich the school and its value to the wider community.

 Contribute to the development of the MAT by sharing effective practice, working in partnership with other academies and promoting other innovative initiatives.

 Co-operates and works with relevant agencies to protect children.

Safeguarding

 Responsible for promoting the welfare of all children within the academy community.

 Create an organisational culture which prioritises the safeguarding of children above all other considerations.
