Bel STi / Bel XR Radar Detector Remote Kit (Pro)

Additional Installation Instructions for Pro Remote Kit

The Bel STi remote kit is intended for those drivers already utilizing a Bel STi radar detector (called the Bel XR in Australia) in order to mount the radar detector in a concealed location.

Step One is mounting your Bel STi into the supplied weatherproof box, and then using silicon to seal up the box completely. You will notice the rear mounting plate of the weatherproof box has two cables. One has a 90 degree 3.5mm plug, which plugs into the audio socket of your STi radar detector, the other has a RJ12 (telephone style plug) which plugs into the power socket of your detector.

Once you have plugged the cables in, you will need to manoeuvre the detector into the weatherproof box, between the foam, taking care not to accidentally unplug the cables as you do so. We recommend mounting the detector flat against the bottom, with the top of the radar detector cushioned against the foam. The cables can be tucked down the side and will hold the detector firmly in place, preventing it moving from side to side.

Your STi radar detector needs to be pushed all the way to the front of the box, so that the buttons on your STi do not press up against the rear panel when closed.

INCORRECT CORRECT IMPORTANT: You need to ensure you silicon around the entire edge of the box before attaching the rear panel to make it water tight. If you do not have a 100% seal, there is the risk of getting water inside the box and damaging your detector.

Once you have completely ‘siliconed’ the rear panel and screwed back onto the box, we suggest you leave the box for 24 hours to allow the silicon to completely dry.

Step Two: There are two recommended installation points for your remote radar detector; either in the front grill of your vehicle, or for completely stealth installations, you can mount it inside/behind your front bumper.

If you choose to mount your radar detector in the front grill of your vehicle, ensure the front Perspex side is facing the road ahead, with a direct line of sight. This is essential for allowing laser guns to still trigger an alert on your detector.

For those that want a completely hidden installation, the radar detector should be mounted either inside or behind your front bumper. This puts the entire unit completely out of sight. Radar microwaves will pass through plastic or fibreglass bumpers easily, so you will still receive radar alerts just as effectively, however since laser uses light pulses, you will not get any laser alerts from your detector when mounted inside or behind your bumper.

In this case, we recommend the purchase of a separate laser detector, or ideally, a laser jammer. The laser detector (or jammer for that matter) heads are much smaller than the radar’s weatherproof box, so they are easier to conceal in the front grill. The laser detector we sell is actually a parking sensor that operates on the license free 905nm frequency, and will direct you with warning tones as you manoeuvre into a parking position. It just also happens to detect police laser guns.

Whilst laser detection is good, it usually only signifies you have just received a ticket, since your speed reading can be obtained in less than a second. For this reason a laser jammer is the only true protection against laser guns.

In either mounting location, the weatherproof box housing your STi should be installed with the tinted Perspex window facing directly in front of your vehicle, ie the cable comes out of the REAR of the box. It does not matter if the box sits horizontally or vertically, so long as it is level and parallel to (both axis) of the road.

If you mount the box facing slightly up/down or left/right, this will decrease the warning time you achieve on radar threats, so once again, you should mount your radar detector box facing straight (out to the road) and parallel to the ground. We recommend mounting the box to your car whilst on a level surface. Once you have installed the box in your vehicle, you should remove the brown protective cover off the front Perspex window. Step Two - Once you have mounted the radar box in the front grill or bumper, and have removed the protective brown adhesive from the Perspex, you need to mount the radar detector interface (wireless transmitter).

The Radar Detector Interface (RDI) does two things. It powers the radar detector, and it sends the alerts to your wireless receiver. You should mount the RDI somewhere in the engine bay that is out of the way, and will not interfere with any mechanical operations of your vehicle. You may also consider encasing the RDI in a waterproof housing (not included) to protect it from water.

The cable coming from the radar detector plugs into the socket on the RDI marked “radar”. The other socket is for the power, which comes from our (supplied) POWERSENSE node.

The POWERSENSE node is a clever little device that makes the whole installation DIY possible, by eliminating the need to run cabling through the firewall, behind your dash and install switches. You simply connect the positive and negative terminals of the POWERSENSE node to your battery, and plug the telephone style connector into the second socket on the Radar Detector Interface (marked power). There is a power extension cable supplied if needed. Again, ensure the cabling will not interfere with any mechanical or safety operation of your vehicle.

Once the POWERNODE is connected to your battery, plugged into the RDI and all the cabling is neatly secured, your radar detector will automatically have power supplied every time you start your vehicle. The POWERNODE senses when your vehicle is running and then feeds power to the radar detector. When the ignition is switched off, the POWERSENSE node automatically cuts power to your radar detector, so there is no residual current draw on your battery.

Step Three: The final step is to install your GPS mirror. There are detailed instructions included with the GPS mirror, but the installation should only take 5 – 10 minutes. Plug in the GPS antenna, run the power cord around the liner to the cigarette lighter socket and you’re done.

You should consult the GPS Mirror for programming instructions, as your radar detector would have been pre-programmed by us. We recommend setting the mute speed to 60km/h and turning off X-band and Ku-band.
