Dear G F I received your email yesterday with some interest. I must admit that I have only a very sketchy idea of the roots of our branch of the family. I do know that my forefathers came from Germany and went to Cape Town, South Africa (where I was born). I am told that we are of the same family branch as Sydney Robey Leibbrandt although this could be more a fancy than a fact given Robey's colourful life (I am not sure if you know the story - it is virtual folk law in S.A.).

My Grandfather was Henry Leibbrandt and he was married to Leila (Groves) who came from Ireland to South Africa for health reasons (TB). My father was the eldest of 2 sons from the marriage, James Henry born 1923 died 1978 (lung cancer). His younger brother Richard would have been about 2 years younger, passed away around 1975 (heart attack). My Grandmother died of TB a few years after Richard's birth. My Grandfather remarried (Randa, I don't know maiden name) there were 3 children from this marriage, all of whom are still alive. The eldest, Harry, is retired and lives in Sydney Australia, having married an Australian girl in the early 1960's he immigrated to Australia in the mid sixties. He has 2 daughters and a son - all live in Sydney. Harry's sister, the middle child from my grandfather's 2nd marriage, was Ramona, a very attractive girl who became a fashion model and later married a Swiss millionaire industrialist, Rene Conte. She has lived in Zurich since the late 50's. The youngest son of my grandfather's 2nd marriage was Eric, he was married with 3 children (twin girls and a son) I only know that he is still married, retired and lives in Fish Hoek near Cape Town. His son Sydney, was murdered in Cape Town in the mid 1980's.

My own immediate family is as I said, my Father James Henry married my mother Margaret Helen (Andrews) who came from England at the end of the 2nd world war - her home in London flattened in bombing raids, she was evacuated to the Isle of Wight for the remainder of the war. My sister (eldest of 3 children), Jennifer June was born in 1948, she married Derrick Smee in Cape Town and has 3 children (all now adult). She lives on the West Coast about 160Kms from Cape Town with her husband in semi retirement. She has done some research into our background and would be interested in your email, I forwarded it to her, if you wish you could contact her at [email protected]. I was born (2nd of 3 children) in 1950, named Robert James Russell. I married Roberta Louise (Voss) and emigrated from South Africa in 1993. I have one son Mikael (adopted, born 1986) we currently live in Perth. My younger brother, Christopher Alan was born in 1954, is married with 5 children and lives in Cape Town.

I don't know if this is of interest to you, but maybe you can figure out where we fit into the big picture!

Regards Rob

Dear Mr. Rob Leibbrandt,

If our name was to be Jones or Peters, then a namesake message wouldn't have been that curious at all. But the exact similarity is the crux of my connection and of course the search we are doing on the other hand for "sound-alike".

I actually do not remember again how in the past mere two days I stumbled (?) over this web! Probably because I am here in Malaysia, in the offshore marine dredging business. I went to Holland Dredging through Google.com obviously and had several sources.

Do you know that we have already a very extensive Family Genealogy Web-page? Done by Hans Leibbrandt in Best - The Netherlands. (Philips city so to say). I came here in Malaysia in March 1996 after ending a 36 years sailing period and a 16 years' ships' Captain commanding time in a Malaysian prime line company.

All this you can of course find in the mentioned Web-page! http://home.iae.nl/users/leibbran/leibbsite/stamm.htm

Even using this wonderful search-engine Google.com and typing in the name and/or its spelling varieties will astound you of the multitude of data!

Hope sincerely to have your first reaction.

Cordial greetings,

GFL.
