Kluber, Tribe feted at Cleveland Sports Awards By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian CLEVELAND -- The Indians did not achieve the moment they really wanted last year, but the team did make history on multiple fronts and was appropriately honored on Wednesday night. During the 18th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards at the Renaissance Hotel, Indians ace Corey Kluber was named the 2017 Professional Athlete of the Year, and the Tribe's American League-record 22-game winning streak was recognized as the Best Moment in Cleveland Sports. Everyone in the room, including manager Terry Francona, would have preferred to be celebrating a World Series triumph. "After the sting of losing to the Yankees," Francona told the audience, "in 28 days, I guarantee you we're coming back with a vengeance." Francona was alluding to the fact that the Indians -- who were ousted from the postseason by New York in the AL Division Series -- will have their pitchers and catchers reporting to Arizona on Feb. 14, marking the official start of Spring Training. This week, the manager and many of the team's players are in Cleveland for Tribe Fest, which takes place on Saturday at the Huntington Convention Center downtown. At the awards banquet, Francona was joined by Tribe catcher Roberto Perez, who accepted Kluber's award on his behalf. Kluber -- the only pitcher in Indians history to win multiple AL Cy Young Awards -- shared some words of gratitude in a brief video. "This is a huge honor for me, personally," Kluber said. "I'd like to thank Roberto for accepting this award on my behalf tonight.

  • Brantley's 1St Slam Ties It, but Tribe Falls in 12Th by Jordan
Brantley's 1st slam ties it, but Tribe falls in 12th By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian CLEVELAND -- The Indians' clubhouse was quiet to the point that the steady hum of the air conditioning was audible late Tuesday night. It was a drastic contrast to the raucous environment that overtook Progressive Field in the ninth inning, when Michael Brantley belted a dramatic, game-tying grand slam. In a near-empty and subdued locker room, Brantley stood at his locker following a tough 8-6 loss in 12 innings to Texas. With one swing, he helped erase what had been a frustrating night in the batter's box for Cleveland's lineup. Then, the Tribe's taxed bullpen could not capitalize on Brantley's heroics. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the win," Brantley said. "But we'll keep battling. Never-die attitude. My teammates did a great job of even giving me that opportunity in the ninth inning right there. It was a hard-fought loss." A lack of offensive production early -- Cleveland went 2-for-19 with runners on base in the first eight innings -- and some relief troubles paved the way to the loss column. Lefty Jeff Beliveau, who played a key role in Monday's win, was responsible for three Texas runs in the seventh. Righty Nick Goody escaped jams in both the 10th and 11th innings, but he flinched in the 12th in the form of back-to-back homers off the bats of Joey Gallo and Isiah Kinder-Falefa. Under different circumstances, Goody likely would not have been in the game in that situation; closer Cody Allen logged 41 pitches on Tuesday and was unavailable, and lefty Andrew Miller is on the disabled list.

Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It reads in part: “Any player who has at least three years of major league service, or who qualified as a “Super Two” player . and whose contract is assigned outright to a minor league club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments.
