Captains starter Zack Draper pitched six shutout innings and gave up just one hit in his 2018 debut. The left-hander had a no-hitter until Brock Lundquist broke it up with a one-out single in the fifth. Meanwhile, Lansing right-hander Maximo Castillo struck out a career-high nine batters in five innings, allowing just one run on four Eastern Division W L GB hits. Lake County pieced together a 2-0 lead on a second-inning RBI single by Jonathan Laureano and a sixth-inning solo homer by Nolan Jones off of reliever Donnie Sellers. In the seventh, the Lugnuts scored their first run when Chavez Bowling Green (Rays) 33 18 -- Young doubled off of Jonathan Teaney and an error by shortstop Ernie Clement allowed Young to score from second. Lansing (Blue Jays) 34 19 -- In the eighth, Yeltsin Gudino led off with a single and Ryan Noda delivered a two-run home run to right that gave the Lugnuts their first and only lead. West Michigan (Tigers) 27 24 6.0 POWER SURGE: Oscar Gonzalez has gone on a tear at the plate lately. With two home runs last Tuesday, Gonzalez Dayton (Reds) 26 24 6.5 has three homers and four doubles in his last n13 games. He is batting .347 in that span (17-for-49) with six RBIs. Fort Wayne (Padres) 23 28 10.0 LONG BALL LEADER: Will Benson is tied with Dayton’s Hendrik Clementina and Lansing’s Brock Lundquist for the South Bend (Cubs) 23 28 10.0 Midwest League in home runs with nine. Benson has clubbed five homers to right field, one to dead center and three to left. All of his homers were to right field in 2016 and 2017. The report stated Jimenez tested positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. WALK-OFF MAGIC: Five of the Captains’ 12 victories at Classic Park this year have come via the walk-off. Lake County beat Fort Wayne on Opening Night on a walk-off single by Jorma Rodriguez. The Captains then won two games on Captains Contacts walk-off passed balls and they beat South Bend in game one of a doubleheader on May 14 with a walk-off solo homer by Oscar Gonzalez. On May 25 against Great Lakes, Ulysses Cantu hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Captains had only one walk-off win in 2017. The right-hander allowed four runs on nine hits, including a solo home run by Marcus Chiu. He struck out four, hit a batter and did not issue a walk. All four runs against Vasquez came in the third and fourth. Vasquez hit Chiu and gave up a single to Ramon Rodriguez before Moises Perez tripled home Chiu and Rodriguez. Brayan Morales then singled to plate Perez. Chiu homered the following inning. The Captains lost, 8- 1. STARTER-PIGGYBACK SPLITS: As a starter, Vasquez has allowed 18 earned runs in 29.1 innings for a 5.52 ERA, but the right-hander was lights -out as a piggyback reliever. Coming out of the bullpen, Vasquez allowed just two runs in 17 innings for a 1.06 ERA. THE CHEF IS IN: Vasquez and Domingo Jimenez cooked the Captains’ clubhouse meal on April 26. The Dominican-born pitchers prepared savory pork, stewed chicken (pollo de quisado), two kinds of rice and two salads. LAST YEAR: Posted a 2.38 ERA with Mahoning Valley, good for the lowest ERA among the team’s regular starters and the second-lowest among pitchers with at least seven starts (behind Zach Plesac – 1.38). 2016: Owned the 4th-lowest ERA in the Indians’ organization in 2016 (3.18 in the AZL).
