No. 6. 2005. 5. 14. 1 IC-7.S-A.-0514 King Kwang-gae-to’s Stele YAMATO SOLIDEIRS IN THE KOREAN PENINSULA Wontack Hong Professor, Seoul University THE SEVEN-BRANCHED SWORD The Seven-branched Sword, that is preserved at the Isono-kami Shrine, is believed to be the sword that is spoken of in Nihongi as having been sent by the Paekche court to the Jingū’s court in 372.1 Nihongi portrays Prince Homuda as a son of Jingū Regent and the heir apparent to the throne at that time. According to the Nihongi record for the year 366, the Paekche court had dispatched scouts to a Kaya state in 364 to gather information about the passages to the Japanese islands. The movement of the Paekche people to the Japanese islands 奈良縣 天理市 石上神宮 七支刀 must have occurred not long after 366. According to the Nihongi record on the extensive pen/insular military activities in 399-70 involving the Yamato soldiers, Paekche generals, King Keun Chogo and the Crown Prince Keun Kusu, Prince Homuda [the founder of the Yamato kingdom] and his followers seem to have departed the Korean peninsula sometime during 369-70. Blaker In the Beginning Getting into the collecting world at the advanced age of thirteen, I found a nice British Victorian officer’s sword in a local antique shop. It took me about four months to earn the $55 to purchase the sword only to find it had been sold. After calling every an- tique shop in the Indianapolis area, my long-suffering parents then drove me around to every shop that had swords. At the furthest away shop, I found a plain looking Prussian Field Artillery En- listed dress saber (Figure 1). When I drew it from the scabbard, I was amazed at the detail of the blade etching. On a blade less than an inch wide, was a scene of a mounted Artillery unit on the move (Figure 2). The etching was so detailed the buttons and cartouche boxes on the soldiers were visible.     Vintage English Backsword By Judith Haynes One of the oldest artifacts in the Historical Society and Museum collection is an English backsword, which was acquired by long-time and now deceased historian, William O. Dupuis. The backsword was authenticated by experts at Higgins Armory as a circa 1630 weapon and a weapon similar to those used in the English Civil Wars (1642-1651), the war between Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and the Royalists (Cavaliers).1 English Backsword circa 1630 BHSM Military Weapons Collection “A sword is defined as an edged weapon with a long blade designed for delivering cutting blows or thrusts or both. It first appeared during the prehistoric period.”2 The earliest swords may have been made of bone or stone. Bronze and iron likely came next as metals for producing such weapons, but once copper was mastered, it helped to make a longer sword blade possible. Today it would be fashioned from steel, an alloy of iron and carbon. Over the centuries, swords came in various sizes and lengths. Some were as tall or long as a person. It is thought that the earliest swords known were from 3,300 BC and one found in Turkey was 60 cm (24 inches) long and made of bronze. Historically, a sword was worn in a sheath called a scabbard which was typically suspended at the waist from a sword belt worn diagonally across the chest or shoulder belt with the scabbard worn across the back. Albeit rarely some very short swords were worn across the back and for a theatrical effect.
