Skill Enhancement Documents are for demonstrating every skill needed for the exam. Reviewing these documents will prepare you for taking the exam and completing your project assignments.

Select Text

Selecting text is the first step in applying a format. You most likely have already been using the drag feature to select text. Follow the instructions below to learn several other selection techniques.

 Double-click in a word to select the word. Click away from the selection to deselect.

 Hold the Ctrl key and click in a sentence to select the sentence.

 Triple-click in a paragraph to select the paragraph.

 Use the Shift key to extent or shorten a selection

Computer Science Introduction to Information Technology (CSCI-1305) is a course providing the student with hands-on experience related to basic computer concepts and current business software. The purpose of the course is to equip students with computer-based skills for continuing their educational and career experiences. The course assumes you already know basic computer skills and will take you to a greater level of proficiency using skills you will need to complete your higher education and move into the career world. You will learn how computers came to be, how networks work, and the hardware and software most often used. You will learn how to speak intelligently regarding computers, use correct terms, and identify components. Your comfort level with software will increase, and you will discover new methods for accomplishing routine tasks. It is likely you will be surprised to learn that the software you use every day has capabilities you are not currently aware of. Because of taking the course, you will become a more capable problem solver and will be able to use computer skills you previously did not know existed. The course will help you prepare to work in the 21st century.

Copy and Paste Text

You can copy using the copy button from the ribbon, right-click in a selection and select copy, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/C. When you paste, you are offered paste options through a small button that appears. Use the button to select how to paste formatting.

Copy the words “Copy and Paste Text” from above. Then paste on the blank line below and use the “Keep Text Only” paste option. Change the Line or Paragraph Spacing

Click in the Paragraph below/Click the Home Ribbon/Paragraph Group/Paragraph Group Dialog Box Launcher (the small arrow in the lower right corner of a group), then change the line spacing to 1.5. Next, adjust the spacing before and after to 24 pt. You can also go to the Page Layout group and use the choices in the Paragraph group.

Consequences of cheating and plagiarism will result in an “F” for the course and possible expulsion from NGU. As a student of information technologies, you should know that embedded document properties are in placed throughout the documents you access through your SAM account. The encrypted code allows for tracking document author, dates, and other incriminating information if a student uses another student's work. Any attempt to cheat in any manner will result in severe consequences.

Align a Paragraph

Click in the paragraph below. On the Home Ribbon, Paragraph Group, experiment with the four alignment buttons.

Students will gain an increased knowledge of computer hardware, software and networking. Students will strengthen abilities for creating and editing documents using Microsoft Office applications. Skills will be developed to enable students to become more productive and efficient when using Information Technology.

Add a Paragraph Shading, Border, and Indents

Click in the paragraph below. On the Home Ribbon, Paragraph Group, click the drop-down arrow on the Shading button. Choose any light color. Click the drop-down arrow on the Borders button. Choose Outside Border. On the Home Ribbon, Paragraph Group, click the dialogue box launcher and indent both the left and right indent to .5.

You are required to purchase a SAM license card for use in setting up an online account where the materials will be delivered. It is critical that you only purchase the exact ISBN number provided for the course. The license card may be purchased from the NGU bookstore, or you may order the materials from other sources. The SAM access license will allow you to set up an on-line SAM account where you will complete assignments. You will be purchasing an electronic key code used to set-up your personal SAM account. The SAM2013 licensed account is compatible with Microsoft Office 2013, or Microsoft 365, or Microsoft Head phones will be used for online training videos. A Thumb/Flash/Jump Drive will be needed for storing projects. Microsoft OneDrive Cloud storage or Dropbox may also be used for storing your projects. Computer labs and the library provide computers and software available for your use. For assignments completed away from campus, students will need Microsoft 2013 or Microsoft 365/2016. NGU provides a FREE download of the software for NGU students who have a username and password to an NGU email account. A high-speed Internet connection will be required for accessing the online assignments. Access to the Internet is made available on campus.

Change Bullet Style

Select the bulleted list above. Click the Home Ribbon/Paragraph Group/drop-down arrow on Bullets Button and select another bullet style.

Apply Numbering to Paragraphs

Select the bulleted list above. Click the Home Ribbon/Paragraph Group/drop-down arrow on Numbering Button and select a numbering style.

Use the Format Painter

Click in a line of the bulleted list above. On the Home Ribbon/Clipboard Group/click the Format Painter button. Drag the mouse while pointing to the four lines below to copy the format.

Select the picture below. On the Picture Tools format Ribbon, Picture Styles Group, Picture Effects, Shadow, experiment with the picture effects.

Set a Tab Stop

By default, the tab stops are set to be every 1/2 inch on the ruler. You can change the first tab stop to any location. Click at the beginning of the text line below. Press tab to see that the test only moved 1/2 inch. Press Backspace to move back to the left side. If necessary, turn on the ruler by clicking the View Ribbon and checking ruler. Position the tip of the mouse pointer along the bottom of the ruler at the 3-inch mark and click. Press the tab key to move to the tab. You will notice the symbol on the ruler representing the tab. You can remove the tab stop by dragging the symbol off the ruler.

Find and Replace

Finding and replacing can be a time saver when you need to change multiple instances of a word. Here’s how it works.

Triple-click in the paragraph below to select the paragraph. Click the Home Ribbon/Editing Group/Replace. In the Find What box type: Cat In the Replace With box type: Dog Click Replace All – Answer No to searching the rest of the document and close the dialog box.

Select the words “on-line SAM account”. On the Insert Ribbon, Links Group, click the Hyperlink Button. In the Address box, type: sam.cengage.com and click OK.

Right-click the hyperlink you created above. Select Edit Hyperlink. Click the ScreenTip button and type: Click here for SAM account. Click OK and OK. Hoover over the hyperlink to view the screen tip. Check Spelling and Grammar

The spelling and Grammar checker will check the entire document unless you have selected text, in which case only the selected text will be checked.

Triple-click in the paragraph below to select the paragraph. On the Review Ribbon, Proofing Group, click the Spelling & Grammar button. When asked, do not check the rest of the document.

Do not purchase any ISBN number other than the number listed in this docqment. There are several variations of the SAM account. You need the acount that provides Assessments, Training, and Projects. If you purchase another account becauze of a lower cost, you may be purchasing an account that only provides one component of the necessary materials. Do not purchase a previously used card. Only a new card will allow the student to set up an account in their name with our institution. Use the Thesaurus

Right-click in the word “introduction” and click Synonyms. Choose “Outline”.

An introduction to the expectations and requirements of the course will be presented. The syllabus will be reviewed. During this unit, instructions for registering the online SAM account will be given, and an account set up to provide the student a log-in name and password to their personal SAM account. Use the Word Count

On the Review Ribbon, Proofing Group, click the Word Count Button.
