Agenda: Course Proposal Worksheet Tutorial

Discussion: Provost’s response to the recommendation from the Curriculum Committee via John Baranski’s email from this morning.

Keri Brandt (KB): Am I correct that regardless of what faculty and curriculum committee (cc) want, you’ll override it?

Barbara Morris (BM): When we’re talking about an administrative form that I have oversight of, no, you can’t take out these pieces.

Kim Hannula (KH): it seems like cc is taking out all the rigor but still wants the sciences to go through and check the boxes.

Ryan Haaland: Where would HLC go to look for evidence of rigor?

BM: HLC can look at any artifacts they want to—registrar, wiki, policies, even at the course level (syllabi). In fact it’s often at the syllabus level (alignment with Program LO and Course LO). If critical pieces are missing (e.g., Rigor policy) then they can audit some courses

(Looking at the Course Proposal worksheet)

Joe Ortega: Does box 28 go to what Kim is saying? If cc is looking at the big picture, 28 is the only one that gets at it.

BM: Let’s go through the form with Kelly

Keri Brandt: Is this form already on the books?

BM: A few years ago this form was devised. The only new changes are what cc wants to get rid of

Kathy FD: Last meeting we were accused of not changing much in going from 3 to 4 credits, (BM stated 90% hadn’t changed), couldn’t this be a non-substantive change? BM: We filled out the HLC substantive change form. It should have been a substantive change before.

(Conversation next about reinstating old courses)

Larry Hartsfield: If we reinstate courses, do we have to fill out this whole form?

BM: Still need course LO aligned to Program LO. Are there current syllabi? If you have it for previous courses, then you can resubmit.

KH: Could there be a reinstate box on #3

Theresa R. said she would think about it.

Jon Baranski: Can the course title limits and description limits be increased so there is more space?

Kathy Kendall: Banner limits us, uAchieve limits us

KB: On #12, why is there a min/max?

BM: Doesn’t matter, so we can take it off

There was then a brief discussion about 50 hours per internship credit (there was some confusion and some thought it was 30 not 50).

Eric Huggins had some questions about teaching courses abroad

Kelly Stanley referenced the essential course elements—need to make sure the integrity of the course is upheld (e.g., need to meet learning objectives)

Discussion about #26—course topics and materials, some faculty did not like that this was on the course proposal form, but it is needed to assess for drift.

Michael Anziano asked if all sections of a course could have a different text.

Lisa Snyder answered yes, as long as the course LO are met.

A conversation ensued about #27. BM made the comment that this gets to intentionality.

KB asked if 25 – 28 should be on the syllabus.

A question came up about the syllabus policy and the course proposal form—are they truly aligned?

Kelly Stanley and Lisa Snyder will hold a separate meeting about the LAC form.

KB asked if Council could talk about the 2 and 4 year schedule.

BM said this could be done at the next Council meeting.

There is a spreadsheet being created by (maybe?) Rick Moore in SOBA that would calculate some information to eliminate the need to fill everything out by hand.
