THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “It's useless to hold a person to anything he says while he's in love, drunk, or running for office.” ~ Shirley MacLaine
♫PRELUDE: Pastorale -Charles Wesley
WE APPROACH GOD
*♫ OPENING HYMN: (VU 661) Come to My Heart
*♪CALL TO WORSHIP: Jesus says to his disciples, “Whoever welcomes a child welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not me, but the One who sent me.” We are called to be a people of welcome. Now when he said, “Welcome a child,” he probably didn’t mean a respectful Norman Rockwell child. He didn’t mean a cute Anne Geddes child dressed up like an adorable fuzzy peach. He meant a REAL child! We are called to welcome real children, real people: Messy. Mean. Mistaken. People. Here’s what we do: We gather to understand what Jesus really said. And to be the people he calls us to be. Let’s get to work!
INTROIT: Child of God 3 PRAYER OF CONFESSION: ‘Jesus asks his Disciples, “What were you arguing about?”
But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.’ God forgive us for how we often put ourselves first, Count ourselves the best. Act as if we are most rich, most right, most wise, most good… (A moment of silence for personal confession) We are the children of God, all of us. And when we welcome one such child, we welcome Jesus. And when we welcome Jesus, we welcome the Holy One who makes all things new!
♪ SUNG RESPONSE: (MV 115) Behold, (behold) behold, (behold) I make all things new, beginning with you and starting from today. Behold, (behold) behold, (behold) I make all things new, my promise is true, for I am Christ the way. (repeat)
CHILDREN'S TIME: Robert Munsch, "Ribbon Rescue" A story about accepting a young Mohawk girl in a dress "all dirty and full of holes," Munsch's tale also functions to remind us of the upcoming October 4th "Sisters in Spirit" vigils that honour the lives of missing or murdered Indigenous women. www.october4th.ca

For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God. For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God. For the wonders that astound us, For the truths that still confound us, Most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God.
