2017 Summer Program June 19 – July 28

Learn or improve your tennis skills with Saint Paul Urban Tennis (SPUT)! We offer Tennis Lessons, Sampler Camps and Team Competition for Saint Paul youth at 30+ neighborhood sites. All instruction centers on the Play First, then Play Better philosophy. We use age appropriate equipment (racquets provided as needed) so that children are successful, and then teach them the skills needed to improve as players. In addition, we teach important life lessons for success off the court. We value and teach the SPUT SPIRIT – (S) service, (P) perseverance, (I) integrity, (R) responsibility, (I) imagination, and (T) teamwork. Children ages 5-8 spend half of a longer tennis lesson in reading and physical literacy activities, and half with tennis instruction!

Daytime lessons are offered Monday-Thursday for $100 with play days and tournament competition on Fridays. Evening lessons are offered two times per week for $50. Financial assistance is available. Legend: Red Ball Class for ages 5-8 year olds includes both tennis instruction and literacy activities. Kids are grouped by level and will play tennis for 35-45 min and work on ABC’s (reading, agility, balance, and coordination) for 25-35 min each day. Junior coaches and adult volunteers are used for off-court ABC activities. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in becoming a reading volunteer for a 50% discount.

Orange Ball Tennis Class for ages 8-11 year olds includes tennis and life skills instruction.

Green Ball Tennis Class for ages 9-12 year olds of beginning – intermediate skill level.

Tennis for Teens (13+) Class uses the yellow ball and is for beginning level teenagers that are considering competitive play on a high school team but need to improve stroke technique and learn basic singles and doubles strategy. Tennis scoring and rules will also be taught.

In Jr. Team Tennis, age 18U and 14U teams compete against one another locally with an opportunity to play in a season-ending Championship with teams from throughout the USTA Northern Section. JTT is for kids with previous tennis experience who already know how to serve, rally, and score. Bus transportation provided for local matches. Cost: $199 Junior Team Tennis Jr. Team Tennis is an official USTA program to help JV and Varsity-level players improve their games on co-ed teams in a fun atmosphere. Kids are placed on teams for practice and competition with others of similar ability. Teams are formed in the age 18U and 14U intermediate divisions. 2017 Family Tennis Events Ernie Green Youth Tennis Tournament: July 7-9 at Como Park High School Courts, For girls and boys in the following age divisions: 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U. USTA sanctioned level 6 event and ranking points awarded. Entry fee is $30 for singles age 11-18; $15 for ages 10 and under, and $15 for doubles.

Family Play Days: Entry level competition for kids in non-elimination format. Only $5 if currently enrolled in SPUT summer program. Compete against a variety of opponents with assistance on rules/scoring from SPUT coaches and volunteers. (Grand)parents welcome to participate or help out! Dates: Fridays, June 23, June 30, and July 14, (1:00pm – 3:00pm) at Como Park High School.

All City Youth Tennis Tournament: Compete for the title of best in the city! July 21 (girls) or July 22 (boys). This tournament is open to all SPUT kids for the low cost of $5. Locations for various age divisions announced in June.

2017 St. Paul Urban Tennis Camps (One Week) SPUT Sampler Camps at Como offer a condensed version of our summer program, with a high dose of tennis instruction for players just starting out with the sport. Each camp runs Mon-Thurs, with Fridays used in case of inclement weather. Camps provide instruction in tennis technique, strategy, and good sportsmanship. Kids ages 8U will take a short snack and reading break with book selections that tie into our SPUT SPIRIT life skills curriculum. Racquets provided as needed. SPUT SPIRIT Day Camps at St. Catherine University: Join us at the all new SPUT SPIRIT Day Camps for youth entering Grades 1-5! Programming will run from 9am-4pm, Mon- Fri, with before and after care available. Camps will provide opportunities for your child to learn tennis, cross-train through exposure to multiple sports, practice reading, and develop social-emotional skills through our SPUT SPIRIT life lessons.
