It is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, containing living CAPE examples of ancient plants unique to the area as well as hundreds of species of TRIBULATION birds, animals and reptiles. The Daintree is home to the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people who have a deep connection with the land. Summary This document lists the stream gauging stations which make up the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) surface water quality monitoring network. Data collected under this network are published on DNRME’s Water Monitoring Information Data Portal. The water quality data collected includes both logged time-series and manual water samples taken for later laboratory analysis. Other data types are also collected at stream gauging stations, including rainfall and stream height. Further information is available on the Water Monitoring Information Data Portal under each station listing. -

Deforestation and Sugar Cane Growing in Eastern Australia, 1860–1995 PETER GRIGGS School of Earth and Environmental Sciences James Cook University – Cairns Campus PO Box 6811 Cairns Queensland, Australia 4870 Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Deforestation associated with the cultivation of sugar cane in the coastal lands of Eastern Australia commenced in the 1860s. Beyond the initial large-scale clearing of the native vegetation to create arable land, the growing of sugar cane placed other demands upon the native forests. The vegetation was cleared to provide timber for buildings, railway sleepers, to supply the firewood for the sugar mill boilers and in some instances to supply the timber used in at least half a dozen Australian sugar mills that were adapted to manufacture lumber in the non-crushing season. Newspapers descriptions, archival records and scientific reports are used to reconstruct the methods adopted to clear the forests and the speed and extent of the loss of forests in the sugar cane growing lands of Eastern Australia. -

SOME ABORIGINAL WALKING TRACKS AND CAMP SITES IN THE DOUGLAS SHIRE, NORTH QWENSLAND C. R. ncCRA- Mssmn, North &eensland INTRODUCTION The Douglas Shire is a small coastal shire in the wet tropics of North Queensland, lying between Buchan Point in the south and Bloomfield in the north (Figure 1 ) . It is dominated by steep rainf orest-covered mountains with a narrow coastal strip, rising from sea level to 1370m in only 6km. Annual rainfall varies from lOOOmm in the south to 3750mm in the north. It is a very well watered district with four main rivers and several good creeks, -all of which are very fast-f lowing. Before clearing began, two-thirds of the Shire'was under heavy tropical rainforest, the other third was timbered grassland (eucalypt and wattle) with some*melaleuca and mangrove swamps. There are also beaches, sand ridges, mangrove-lined rivers and creeks, and some salt pans. My interest in Aboriginal walking tracks in this region began in the 1920's, when I was a young lad. We lived on a farm on the banks of the South Mossman River where we often met local Aborigines, the men all carrying their spears wherever they went. Sometimes there were strangers with them who said they came from Kuranda, Bloomfield, Daintree or other distant places. There were no direct koads to these , places that we knew of and we learnt that they used their own walking tracks. As a pig hunter around cane farina, I often saw such tracks in the rainforest and at time? used them for access to cleared land. -

The West Quinkan country is characterised by broad sandstone plateaus into which the Mossman River and its tributaries have cut deep gorges. The vegetation is dominated by forest and woodland, with unmapped patches of vine-thicket/rainforest in sheltered sites and around springs. The sandstones of the West and East Quinkan Reserves have not been affected by grazing and contain important sources of permanent water. Quinkan is well known as an area of high cultural value but its environmental value is less well understood. The complex landscape of Quinkan, consisting of tropical savanna woodland on eroded sandstone escarpments with some grassland and small patches of rainforest, and its relatively unaltered state, suggests its likelihood as an area of high biodiversity.
