Humans construct humanity and personhood partially via interactions with other-than-human persons, such as animals, plants, and objects. I examine ritualized interactions between humans and others-than-human in a southeastern Indigenous "natureculture," exploring the intersections of ontology, personhood, and performance practice. Pvlvcekolv, an animistic Florida-based tribal town with a ceremonial Fire that pre-dates European Contact, maintains a centuries-old ritual tradition, the busk. Sometimes known as "Green Corn Ceremonialism," many Native communities share this tradition, including ii Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Yuchi, and other Creek peoples historically and in the present day. Performing the songs, dances, and ritual actions of the busk places participants into dialogue with other-than-human persons. -

His Policy was WHAT?!?...Thomas Jefferson and the Native Americans Summary Description: Thomas Jefferson was a unique and very influential individual in our nation’s history. I have had the opportunity to examine and explore Mr. Jefferson while at this NEH Seminar. I have studied at great length both his writings and his character. I discovered that Jefferson was a man of very conflicting styles and ideals. He would write or say one thing, and would then carry out something different. I believe you will discover this in the lesson concerning Thomas Jefferson and his communications concerning Native Americans. Intended Audience: The materials and topic are best suited for a high school classroom. Unites States History, Sociology, Cultural Studies, or Native American Studies would be the appropriate class settings. This lesson is formulated for a class of 5-6, 50 minute class periods. Block scheduling, or a different length class period will require modifications. The lesson could also be modified for a middle school setting. The Purpose: Many would argue that Thomas Jefferson was one of the most important presidents of the United States. During his life, the United States was encountering issues with the Native Americans, both good and bad. I believe that our students and our society can be enhanced by understanding the role and the issues surrounding the Native Americans throughout history. One aspect of this role is to understand the relationship and ideas that Jefferson portrayed towards Native Americans before, during, and after his presidency. Learning Objective: Students will be able to: Explain the attitude of Thomas Jefferson towards Native Americans as expressed in his writings prior to his presidency. -

Slavery in America: The Montgomery Slave Trade Equal Justice Initiative SlavEry In amErIca Beginning in the seventeenth century, millions of African people were kidnapped, enslaved, and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas under horrific conditions that frequently resulted in starvation and death. Nearly two million people died at sea during the agonizing journey. As American slavery evolved, an elaborate and enduring mythology about the inferiority of black people was created to legitimate, perpetuate, and defend slavery. This mythology survived slavery’s formal abolition following the Civil War. In the South, where the enslavement of black people was widely embraced, resistance to ending slavery persisted for another century following the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865. Today, 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, very little has been done to address the legacy of slavery and its meaning in contemporary life. During the dreaded Mid- Passage (a trip of from three weeks to more than three months) . [t]he foul and poisonous air of the hold, extreme heat, men lying for hours in their own defecation, with blood and mucus covering the floor, caused a great deal of sickness. Mortality from undernourishment and disease was about 16 percent. The first few weeks of the trip was the most traumatic experience for the Africans. A number of them went insane and many became so despondent that they gave up the will to live. -

Coclanis) This study attempts to analyze the economic effects of the domestic slave trade and the slave traders on the American South in a broader Atlantic context. In so doing, it interprets the trade as a sophisticated business and traders as speculative, entrepreneurial businessmen. The majority of southern planters were involved in the slave trade and relied on it to balance their financial security. They evaluated their slaves in cash terms, and made strategic decisions regarding buying and selling their property to enhance the overall productivity of their plantations in the long run. Slave traders acquired business skills in the same manner as did merchants in other trades, utilizing new forms of financial options in order to maximize their profit and taking advantage of the market revolution in transportation and communication methods in the same ways that contemporary northern entrepreneurs did. They were capable of making rational moves according to the signals of global commodity markets and financial movements. -

TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE 1619-1807 The transatlantic slave trade began in North America in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619 with the arrival of the first slave ship bearing African captives. For nearly 200 years, this trade would continue. European nations would send manufactured goods to Africa and exchange these items for enslaved Africans. They would then send these people to the Americas to be sold. On the return voyages back to Europe, ships were filled with raw materials from the Americas. The transatlantic slave trade was outlawed by the US Congress on March 2, 1807. -

The North Carolina Historical Review Volume XIV April, 1937 Number 2 CHILD-LABOR REFORMS IN NORTH CAROLINA SINCE 1903 By Elizabeth Huey Davidson In 1903 North Carolina adopted its first child-labor law. It was a weak measure, forbidding the employment of children un- der twelve in factories, establishing a maximum of sixty-six hours a week for persons under eighteen, and providing no machinery for enforcement of the law. The passage of this measure had resulted from a slow growth of sentiment against the evils of child labor, and its terms represented a compromise between the reformers and the cotton manufacturers of the State. There was no organization to push further legislation, however, until the formation of the National Child Labor Com- mittee in 1904. This committee was largely inspired by the work of Dr. Edgar Gardner Murphy of Montgomery, Alabama, and had at first a number of prominent Southerners on its mem- bership roll. For its Southern secretary the committee chose Dr. Alexander J. McKelway, a Presbyterian clergyman of Char- lotte, North Carolina. The law of 1903 had been in effect a year when the committee attempted to reopen the drive for legislation. Its effectiveness in that length of time cannot be judged accurately, since the re- port of the Commissioner of Labor for 1904 fails to record the number of children employed in manufacturing. 1 The general consensus of opinion expressed by the manufacturers to the com- missioner was that the law should be accepted in good faith, but that it should also be the last one of its kind.
