Great read on the best game show announcer EVER!!By Michael CecilianiI purchased this book a couple of years ago when it first came out. Johnny Olson was best known for his long- time association with Goodson-Todman as their main announcer for their game shows for over 25 years, but he did so much more in both TV and radio. Author Randy West gives detailed accounts of how Johnny took on all sorts of jobs and how he had an effect on those he worked with as well as the final product of the show itself. Nobody said anything negative of him. In the world of show biz, that's practically unheard of.The book is an amazing account of covering a man who made a name for himself by the late 60s. He was ready to take it easy when Goodson-Todman relocated him to work in California for what would be the busiest and most productive years of his life. It was all really unexpected to him. He had a bought a farm in West Virginia and commuted regularly to CA to do his shows. Through it all, he had an energy level and work ethic of a man in his 20s. I remember seeing him at The Price is Right and Match Game, running around the place and dancing like a teenager during his audience warm-ups, and he was in his 60s at the time.Johnny O was the best game show announcer there was. The Price is Right had a HUGE hole to fill when he died in 1985. Ironically, Johnny was on his way to a "Price" taping when he felt ill and pulled his car over. So he went out "with his boots on" so to speak. If you get GSN, the Game Show Network on your cable TV provider, you can still hear Johnny O on Match Game every morning. If you want to know all about the man, this book definitely does him justice. I got my copy at .3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Book on a Really Nice GuyBy John EdwardsMy friend and I spent our summers in the late 1960s visiting as many game show tapings as we could. Over time, Johnny Olson got to know us and would stop and chat with us as we waited on line outside the theater. He was a nice guy and was always very friendly to a couple of stupid kids from Queens. One day, we attended a taping of To Tell the Truth over at what is now the Ed Sullivan Theater. Mr. Olson saw us there and waved hello. We then rushed over to 30 Rock on foot to see another game show (I forget which one) that was scheduled to begin about a half-hour after TTTT ended. Mr. Olson also announced this show. In such situations, he had a car and driver available to shuttle him to the next studio studio. As Mr. Olson left TTTT, he saw my friend and I waiting on line and waved to us. Then, minutes later, as we stood on line over at 30 Rock, Mr. Olson entered the lobby and started walking over to the elevator bank to head to the studio. He then turned his head and saw us. His jaw dropped open. Mr. Olson then walked over to us and said, "How did you guys beat me here?" My friend replied, "We walked! In midtown, there are definite advantages to not being able to afford a taxi!"Mr. Olson simply laughed and shook his head. On another day, he had my friend perform "The Peacock Dance" on the studio floor, but I'll leave that memory to another day.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Treasure Trove of Interesting Trivia!By David HammettAnyone 30 or older... as well as younger GSN viewers... will recognize Johnny Olson's voice any time they think of (or watch) "The Price Is Right," "Match Game," or a host of other shows that Johnny played a significant role in. Randy's outstanding book basically takes you through Johnny's life and career; it is a biography, to be sure, but it is even moreso a unique perspective on the events that ultimately shaped Johnny's life, as well as ours.If you're a fan of classic TV, you're bound to learn a lot from what Randy shares with us; if you're an expert in the subject, you'll find anecdotes and nuances that will further shape your understanding. There are a variety of photos as well, most of which were new to this reader.Whatever expectations you have of the book, I predict that you'll come away from it amazed at the breadth of interesting material. Come on down and order your own copy now! While Johnny Olson is best known as the original announcer on CBS' The Price Is Right, he was a seminal figure in radio and television whose prolific career is woven into the fabric of broadcasting's history. Using Olson's own words and documentation of his career, as well as his personal remembrances of the birth of modern media, this book traces the development of radio and TV from their experimental roots, through their growth to America's most infl uential sociological force. From Marconi to Match Game, from the birth of the CBS, NBC, ABC and Mutual radio networks, through the rise and demise of DuMont television, and a glorious history of game shows, this is the story of American broadcasting as experienced by a respected and celebrated participant, Johnny Olson - one of TV's most recognizable voices, who enjoyed a 58-year career that intersected with the stars, shows, and events that are part of our cultural tapestry. Randy West tells this story from a unique perspective, having enjoyed Olson's personal mentoring through his own impressive career that included work at Olson's podium as announcer on The Price is Right. Randy shares Olson's personal photos and personal notes, as well as the stories his mentor shared over their 15 year friendship. This is a fresh and fun look at TV as you've never seen it! NEW YORK I Ul UTU CAIRO BERLIN-ROME 2 NBC TRANSMITTER When, a few short weeks ago, the United States was plunged into war, the big NBC family from coast to coast assumed its new responsibilities without confusion and with an efficiency of which I am extremely proud. The job you did during those stirring hours of December 7th and the way you have carried on since that day has been no surprise to us; but it was a heart-warming example of NBC spirit. 1941 saw NBC working in close coopera- tion with the National Government and its various agencies. The Treasury Depart- ment, the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps and the other branches of the Gov- ernment having a part in the preparation of National Defense made heavy calls on the broadcasting industry. But we had antici- pated their needs. NBC, with its hundreds of fine programs, conceived in the interest of National Defense, made its impress on the American public; there can be no doubt of that. 1942 will present new problems, many of them, no doubt, of serious moment. But come what may, NBC will be ready. We’re enlisted for the duration; we’ll giye no less than our best. Thanks to eyeryone of you for what you haye done and what you are doing.

  • The Origins and Earliest Surviving Live Tv Broadcast Recordings
Television Recording Origins: Oldest Surviving Live TV Broadcast – R. Shagawat TELEVISION RECORDING – THE ORIGINS AND EARLIEST SURVIVING LIVE TV BROADCAST RECORDINGS By Robert Shagawat E Mail: [email protected] Abstract Of Information as of October 4, 2004 updated October 2010 – April 2011 1947 DuMont RA-103 TV Set Early Kinescope Recording Machine Called the Chatham (or “Doghouse”) model Introduction - Oldest Surviving Record of Live Television Program: What is the earliest surviving live television broadcast recording? It is surprising how little definitive research and solid information is available on this topic. This article seeks to answer this question, based on what we know today. Lack of Prior Research: While there has been a significant amount of research done on the oldest surviving live radio broadcast airchecks (from 1925 or earlier), there is a scarcity of comprehensive research on the earliest live TV transmission recordings that are still in existence. This dearth of information on what remains of the formative years of television was not anticipated, given the vital importance of the TV legacy to the “baby boomers” raised on the media. It is also amazing, given the relatively recent appearance of television during the 20th century (where more documentation of its earliest records would be thought to exist). Historic Means of Capturing Live Television: First of all, we must understand how early TV broadcasts could be captured in the days before videotape and later analog and digital recording methods (as will be further elaborated below). The kinescope recording was filmed from the kinescope or cathode ray tube TV receiver, where these films of live television as taken from the kinescope device were soon themselves just called “kinescopes”.
