Dear Parents,

I am very excited to bring the flipped classroom to my Pre-AP Biology classes this semester.

What is a Flipped Classroom you might ask?

In a traditional classroom, the teacher lectures to the students over a PowerPoint while the students take notes. This process can take a very long time as the teacher waits for every student to write down their notes. Sometimes students are unable to keep up with the lecture while at the same time some students are finished and begin to distract the class while waiting for others to catch up. With flipped lecture, the students can watch the lecture at their pace. They have the ability to pause, rewind, and re-watch the lecture as many times as they need. The assignments the students typically had to do at home without help from the teacher are now done in class.

After the video there is a knowledge check. This is used to see if the students understand everything or if they are struggling. I will then look at the data from the knowledge check before the students arrive in class. This will allow me to see where the students were struggling and address that in class. Students are encouraged to use the video and their notes while taking the knowledge check. This will ensure they do well and reinforce concepts as they search their notes for the correct answers.

What are the benefits of a Flipped Classroom?

 Quality one-on-one instruction and assistance during the class time. The teacher is now able to give guidance and inspiration to the student as they are working through assignments.  Lecturing or talking “at the students” is for the most part removed from the class.  Class time is now used for discussion, addressing questions, application, inquiry, problem solving, and helping students be successful.  Flipped classrooms make immediate help and feedback available to students.  The flipped classroom increases the rigor and relevance of the content being taught which in return increases the depth of knowledge for the students.  Flipped classrooms are more student centered which increases further application of the material being taught.

In closing, I am very excited about this learning opportunity for my students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.
