SOAR to S.A.I.L. Program Overview

SOAR TO S.A.I.L. (Students Acquiring Interdisciplinary Literacy) “ SOAR TO SAIL” is a free summer program designed to help students successfully transition from middle school to high school both academically and socially. Research suggests that many incoming freshmen are ill-prepared for the challenges of high school, which contributes to higher drop out rates and lower academic success. Oxon Hill High School is committed to addressing this issue and believes that a solid introduction to 9th grade will contribute towards academic success in high school. The goals of “SOAR TO SAIL” are: ● Engage students in learning processes and make learning enjoyable by providing realistic and relevant curricula. ● Help students understand this important transition in their lives, shortening the learning curve for rising 9th graders. ● Reducing the difficulties experienced with time management, study skills, and social adjustment. ● Engage parents through a four-session parent program called "Building the Village," designed to help parents support high school students. The program will run July 7th - 31st, Mondays through Thursdays, (no Fridays) from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.. Bus transportation will be provided with designated pick-up and drop-off locations. Attendance will be closely monitored and students will be allowed only one absence throughout the program. Further, the Prince George’s County Code of Student conduct as well as any other school rules, will be enforced throughout student participation in the program.
