Earlier this year, Time Magazine did an extensive feature on possible breakthroughs in human longevity. If I remember right, an article suggested that soon it would be possible for humans to routinely live over 120 years up to even 150 years. Of course that is nothing when compared to Methuselah who lived 969 years. While we might not want to live that long in this corrupted body in this evil world, we certainly can be grateful for medical technology which is lengthening the human life span. And, we do look forward to eternity. I find it interesting that it is more than simply Christians who believe in an afterlife. The great pyramids of Egypt were built to assure the Pharaoh of a great afterlife.

    HOW CHINESE NEW MEDIA CONSTRUCT ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES: GENDER, NATIONALISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM by QINGRU XU (Under the Direction of Dr. Peggy J. Kreshel) Around the world, sport is principally organized around masculinity. Women are often afforded limited access to sports participation, situated as “others” in a male-dominated domain. This gender inequality is mirrored in sports media; selective representations have a tremendous influence on people’s perception and understanding of sport, athletes, and society. In this study, I examined media representations of two Chinese female athletes of different status—specialized athlete, Ding Ning, and professional athlete, Li Na— in China, a nation in the midst of political/economic/cultural transformation and a sports reform initiative. Analyzing stories drawn from two Chinese web portals, I focused particularly on how gender, nationalism, and collectivism/individualism entered into media representations to determine if there were differences in the portrayals of these two female athletes. The portraits that emerged were very distinctive. A textual analysis revealed significant differences in each of the three conceptual areas. A fourth theme, which I have identified as “monetary value” also emerged. Possible explanations for and implications of differences in the media portrayals of the two athletes at this particular historical moment in Chinese society were provided. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West.     Spotlight on Global Jihad (September 1-7, 2016) Main events of the week n The Turkish Army and rebel organizations have finished cleansing an area about 52 km long along the Syrian-Turkish border (between the city of Jarabulus and the city of A’zaz). This means the creation of Turkish-controlled territorial contiguity along a section of the border previously controlled by ISIS. Thus ISIS lost its strongholds near the border. Its logistical channel from its core countries (Syria and Iraq) to the outside world suffered a major blow. Now the Turkish Army and rebel organizations apparently intend to expand their area of control to the city of Al-Bab (ISIS’s last significant stronghold west of the Euphrates River) and the city of Manbij (which has been taken over by the predominantly Kurdish SDF). n In southern Aleppo, the Syrian Army and the forces that support it managed to take over the military college compound. Thus the logistical corridor that the rebels had managed to create was severed, and the siege on eastern Aleppo, held by the rebel organizations, was renewed. n While ISIS is losing territory in Syria and Iraq, it is stepping up its efforts to carry out acts of terrorism and guerrilla warfare: this week ISIS carried out a series of attacks in central Baghdad and other locations throughout Iraq against the Iraqi Army, the Shiite militias, and population groups that ISIS considers infidels. Scores of civilians and members of the Iraqi security forces were killed in these terrorist attacks. In Syria, ISIS carried out five simultaneous suicide bombing attacks in five major cities controlled by the Syrian regime and the Kurds.
