PROMPT 19: the Protagonist Is the Main Character in a Work of Literature Who Often Changes

PROMPTS - page 1 4/5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY

The following are prompts taken from past MCAS tests. You will notice that each prompt is set up following the format for the introduction for a 4/5 paragraph essay which is: motivator, thesis, blueprint.

The first sentence in the prompt is a broad general statement about what the essay is to be about and this is the motivator. Think of it as your cool and captivating green beginning. If you can not create your own motivator, then use the one from the prompt, so you show the reader that you know what to do. If you can add some of your own words, that is even better.

All the prompts begin the next sentence with the words: From a work of literature you have read in or out of school. Cross this out. The rest of this sentence tells you what you are to write about and this is your thesis. This sentence is red hot because it is your topic. Use as much wording as you can from the prompt, and add the title of the piece about which you are writing and the author’s full name.

All the prompts begin the last sentence with the words: In a well- developed composition. Cross this out as you surely are not going to write a bad composition. What you have let is the blueprint. This sentence is blue for obviously reasons. Many times this sentence will clearly state three things that you must discuss to support your thesis. If so, use the wording from the prompt and create your blueprint. If not, read carefully what they are telling you to do, and create your blueprint using as much of the prompt’s wording as you can.

For the following prompts, read each carefully, decide which novel you will write about, and create an introduction following the motivator, thesis, blueprint format.

By the time you finish these, you will be an expert; and no prompt on the MCAS will give you any trouble.
