History I started in film and television in 1983. I have received formal training in camera operation and lighting through BBC, Australian and New Zealand Lighting Designers, and Directors of Photography. Auckland Company Perspective Video initially started me in Electronic News Gathering for ITN London 1986. This was complimented by operating under the tuition of a Director of Photography on programmes and TV commercials. In 1987 I was part of a drama-training program run by TVNZ. This was a 6-week intensive course to establish a base of camera operators who understood the fast/high quality demands of Drama camera work. I also received pedestal camera operation training, and am proficient at operating camera cranes, gib arms, and hot heads. Skill Summary Since those early days I have worked on a huge number and range of documentaries, programmes, TVCs, shows and events.

I shoot all current formats including 35mm film, 16mm film, HDSR, REDCAM, HDCAM, HDV, DVCPROHD, Digital Beta, XDCam etc. I also own/operate a camera rental company which owns 6 x HD cameras, and 1 x SD Digital Betacam.

I have been DP on 8 TV drama shows, operated on more than 20 and DP’d literally thousands of commercials.

I regularly cover Iron man, facing backwards on a motorbike. I have been into quasi war zones filming illegal immigrants crossing the Mexican US border at night. I have hung out of helicopters, been strapped to the front of trucks, jumped off bridges, been swimming with sharks, abseiled down cliffs and perched on high speed jet boats whilst filming. I AM up for a challenge.

Interests  My interests include:  Diving  Fishing  Motorcycles  New Zealand History  Boxing

Travel/Tourism footage I have worked on several NZ based tourism shows and have a several international clients who keep returning for more footage and new stories. I believe that a repeat client is a sign of a happy client.

Career Objectives The greatest thing about being a Director of Photography is that every day you get to do something you love.

High Definition Video As a DP my job is to interpret a scene, a mood, or a creative concept and translate it into effective pictures. To achieve this I may utilize a variety of tools. I can manipulate the light, the framing and the image resolution. Perhaps most importantly, I play to the strengths of the capture format. Working with a wide range of formats for many years I have become good at helping video formats look a little more like film. With the arrival of HD Video I no longer need to worry so much. HD Video is a beautiful format, with a large contrast ratio and brilliant resolution. It’s not ‘Film’, it is it’s own format and look.

Embrace it, its here to stay!!!!!
