Institute Management Team Meeting Monday, March 5, 2012 Attending: Mike Demissie, Manohar Kulkarni, Geoff Levin (representing Brian Anderson), Don McKay, Gary Miller, Bill Shilts, Steve Wald, Angie Wisehart

1. Vice Chancellor for Research Candidate Interviews Bill reported that he participated in interviews for the 3 finalists last week. In addition, he and Gary attended each candidate’s public forum. Bill and Gary agree that all 3 are very qualified.

2. University Annual Report Bill reported that he and Libby spoke with Colleen DeHart (Information and Media Specialist, University Relations) regarding the carbon sequestration project. A brief write-up on the project will be included in the University’s annual report.

3. ISGS Update Don reported that he met with Eric Neumann to begin planning for the work teams study. ISGS has ~20 teams that could be analyzed, but that number may be reduced. Don will follow-up with section heads and team leaders.

Don reported that he will be at the AASG Liaison Committee meeting next week in Washington, DC.

Don reported that he is soliciting ideas for drilling. This time of year is usually idle for the drillers.

4. Majora Carter Workshop Gary reported that the Institute agreed to help sponsor the Majora Carter workshop that will be hosted by the Office of Sustainability. Gary participated in a planning meeting today. The objective of Ms. Carter’s visit is to focus on sustainability and green jobs, and bring the University and the community together to work collectively. The workshop will be in late April. Gary is not sure how the Institute can be involved in the workshop yet.

5. Annual Review Process Gary reported that ISAS has completed their annual reviews, and the Water Survey is in the process of completing their reviews. The other Surveys are starting to ask their staff to put their goals/accomplishments together and to review their current job descriptions. This step should be completed by the end of March. The supervisors should work on the reviews in April and by the end of May each supervisor should have met with their staff.

6. Management Team Retreat Bill asked the Directors to bring their Mission and Vision statements with them to the retreat next week. He would like to review and approve them. Bill also asked the Directors to put a summary together of all of the energy-related projects in their Surveys and be ready for discussion. Bill believes a lot of the energy projects are transdisciplinary.

Succession planning will also be discussed.

7. ISGS Post Doc Student from Canada Bill reported that one of his students from Canada, Olivier Caron, will be coming to the ISGS as a Post Doc. Olivier is finishing his PhD at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He will be working on 3D mapping while he is here in addition to helping Bill with some of his research.

8. Naturally Illinois Expo Steve reported that donations continue to come in, and shared the latest donor list which can also be found on the Expo website: http://www.prairie.illinois.edu/expo/.

Gary reminded the directors that there is not a scheduled tour, and that they should just plan to visit the exhibits at their convenience. Gary encouraged the directors to attend the staff reception at 3:00 on Friday.

Several VIP invitees responded that they will plan to attend the Expo: Jim Barham, Ed Thornton, Kay Whitlock, Suzanne Malec-McKenna, John Rogner, and Debbie Stone.

9. Illinois Oil & Gas Association (IOGA) Annual Meeting Steve reported that he attended the IOGA Annual Meeting in Evansville, IN late last week at the invitation of IOGA’s Director and Joan Crockett (ISGS staff member and IOGA member). Steve found the meeting to be enlightening. Fracking was discussed as well as the new regulations that have passed in Illinois.

10. University IT Council Gary reported that Doug Ward (ISWS) will represent the Institute on the University IT Council, and Mark Yacucci (ISGS) will be Doug’s backup.

11. INHS Update Geoff reported that a list of INHS work teams has been provided to Eric Neumann to begin planning for a study. They have identified 15-20 teams to be analyzed.

12. ISTC Update Manohar reported that his meeting with Vice Chancellor Easter and Associate Vice Chancellor Guenther went well. They discussed various ISTC projects and the Sustainable Electronics Initiative. Dr. Easter encouraged him to contact Jack Dempsey (Executive Director, Facilities & Services) to find out more information on the PV solar demonstration facility that Facilities & Services will be building.

Manohar reported that the request to hire for the Assistant Director of the Emerging Technologies and Assistance Program (ETAP) has been submitted for campus approval. Manohar also brought up the need for research data retention and record keeping, especially when an employee transfers to another Survey or unit on campus.

13. ISWS Update Mike reported that he attended a meeting at IDNR with the Mayors and Legislators from the Quad Cities area regarding the flooding risk assessment work being conducted by Sally’s group. The Engineers for the cities indicated that they do not have issues with the technical work that the Water Survey is doing, but that they have issues with the policies that are in place.
