Music Man Character List:

Professor Harold Hill: (C boy) Baritone The male lead, he's the focus of the whole show. A traveling salesman who sells boys' bands, but he can't read a note of music. The stereotypical con man, he knows how to smooth-talk people and worm his way out of difficult situations.

Marian Paroo: (C girl) Soprano Daughter of Mrs. Paroo, sister to Winthrop. She is the stuffy, conceited librarian and piano teacher in town. She is very learned and defends the “questionable” books that are in the library. She

Marcellus Washburn: (C boy) Tenor Marcellus works in town and is dating Ethel Toffelmeir. He knows Harold from a long time ago and they become fast friends again. He is a comical character. He helps Harold in learning about the town and setting up the con.

Mrs. Paroo: (C girl) Mezzo Soprano Widowed, Irish mother to Marian and Winthrop. Sweet homemaker who wants the best for everyone. Gives Marian a lot of advice about finding a man.

Winthrop Paroo: (B boy) Should look ages: 6-8 years old Marian’s lisping little brother. Does not talk because he misses his deceased father. Learns to trust again and is a chatterbox by the end of the show.

Amaryllis (B girl) Should look ages: 8-10 years old Young piano student of Marian’s. Likes Winthrop.

Mayor Shinn: (C boy) Non-singing, strong comic actor The Mayor of River City. Somewhat blustery, pompous, and not terribly intelligent. Gets a lot of things wrong! Stereotypical small-town politician.

Eulalie Shinn (C girl) Alto Mayor Shinn’s wife. Definitely a society lady who knows everyone in town and keeps her husband in line. She struts like a snooty peacock and doesn’t think she looks as ridiculous as she really is. Very comical part.

Zaneeta Shinn: (C girl) Non-singing, strong dancing role Mayor’s & Eulalie’s silly teenage daughter. Has a crush on the “bad” boy in town, Tommy. Not rebellious but learning to stand up for herself.

Gracie Shinn: (A or B girl) Should look ages: 6-9 years old Mayor’s and Eulalie’s younger daughter. Somewhat of a tomboy and a bit bratty.

Tommy Djilas: (C boy) Non-singing, strong dancing role A teenager who has a crush on Zaneeta. Wants to be good but is considered the “bad” boy in town. Harold befriends him useful and gives Tommy self-confidence and trust. Quartet/School Board Members: (C boys or C girls) The School Board does not get along with the other members. However, once Harold gets them to sing with the others, they are inseparable and learn to sing and act in harmony.

Olin Britt: Bass, Editor of the town newspaper Oliver Hix: Baritone, A banker Ewart Dunlop: Baritone, Owner of the grocery store Jacey Squires: Tenor, Owner of the livery stable

Pick-a-little Ladies: (C girls) All are gossipy ladies who are buddies of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women.

Ethel Toffelmier: Plays the player piano. Is jolly and friendly. Dating Marcellus. Alma Hix: Wife to Oliver. Maud Dunlop: Wife to Ewart. Mrs. Squires: Wife to Jacey.

Charlie Cowell: (C boy) Non-singing A rival traveling anvil salesman. First seen on train at the start of the show. He returns to town to warn them about Harold and hopefully earn sales himself.

Constable Locke: (C boy) Non-singing Town policeman. Always ready to do as instructed.

Conductor: (C boy) Non-singing Conductor on train. Very business like. Intent on collecting tickets and doing job.

Traveling Salesmen 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5: (C boys) Salesmen on train that warn each other about Harold Hill. Sing in Rock Island.

Newspaper Readers 1, 2 and 3: (B or C boys) Men reading newspapers on the train. Sing in Rock Island.

River City Townspeople: (A, B and C boys and girls) These are small town folks who are proud of their town. They consist of men and women, and children.

River City Teens: (C boys and girls) Dancers in Shipoopi, the Library scene, among others.

Wa Tan Ye girls: (A and B girls) Young girls featured during Eulalie's "Spectacle" just prior to "76 Trombones."

Boys Band: (A and B boys) Young boys who enter in uniform at the end of the show

Farmer and Farmer’s Wife: (C boy and girl) Sing one line in Iowa Stubborn

Man #1 and 2, Woman # 1, 2 and 3, Boy: (B or C boys or girls) All have one or two lines in the script. May be assigned after casting.
