Shapiro 23 Project summary: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a newly developed intervention for insomnia integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia with mindfulness meditation. This research project is the first step towards answering the overall question of interest: Can a mindfulness-based intervention be effective in the treatment of insomnia?

2007 Comparing Mindfulness Meditation to Social Support. Principal Investigator: Shapiro, S. L. Dean’s Grant. Santa Clara University, $3000. Project Summary: This randomized controlled trial examines the differential effects of participation in a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program versus a mindfulness-based support group. The goal is to determine to what extent the effects of meditation practice are responsible for the salutary results of the MBSR program.

2005–2006 Development of a Contemplative Practice Course. Principal Investigator: Shapiro, S. L. American Council of Learned Societies, $10,000. Project Summary: The Contemplative Practice Fellowship involved the development of a course entitled “Mindfulness and Psychotherapy: Theory, Therapy, Research and Practice.” This course offers rigorous examination and training in mindfulness and its applications to psychotherapy. It focuses on both classical and contemporary theoretical perspectives, surveys and summarizes the several hundred studies of contemplative practices with an emphasis on the more recent well-controlled designs, and examines clinical therapeutic applications, including the treatment of anxiety and depression, eating disorders, hypertension and chronic pain. Experiential practice is core to the course, as it will offer students a deeper understanding of meditation and its potential implications.
