U ime Organizacijskog i programskog odbora Sven Jelaska Dear biology lovers! Beside courage, enchantments with biology were also necessary for making decision to organise 11 th Croatian Biological Congress in this time of crisis. Fortunately, you have disarmed all our doubts and questions about it with your interest. With great pleasure we present you here abstracts of 7 plenary lectures and submitted abstracts of 111 oral and 124 poster presentations. Diversity of presentations covers more or less same topics as in previous Congresses, with maybe some changes in number of presentation within sections. I believe that you will find plenty of interesting information in the Proceeding, as well as food for thoughts. In addition, it will make your waiting for the next Congress easier. High number of younger participants confirms position of these Congresses in education process, as well as it ensures bright future for Congresses to come. Finally, I have to share my satisfaction that we deal with such a beautiful and dynamical science which requires from us to be dynamical as well to successfully contribute to its development and understanding. On behalf of the Organizing and Programme Committee Sven Jelaska iv Hrvatski biološki kongres nije samo mjesto za predstavljanje rezultata svog dosadašnjeg istraživa čkog rada, ve ć i mjesto gdje susre ćemo prijatelje s kojima komentiramo novije i prisje ćamo se nekih prošlih doga ñaja. U ime znanstvenog odbora Göran Klobu čar Croatian Biological Congress is not just a place where we present the results of our latest research, but also a place where we meet our friends and comment on some recent or not so recent events. This traditional meeting of Croatian biologists should be, today more then ever, an opportunity to organize future scientific collaborations, opportunity to join forces in expanding our recent scientific endeavours or to, together with our fellow biologists, conceive completely new scientific ideas, even more innovative and interesting. Therefore, I wish to all the participants of this Congress to have at least one moment of inspiration when listening to results and findings of their fellow biologists, which will result in a multitude of new ideas for their future scientific research. And most important of all, I wish that everyone attending the 11th Croatian Biological Congress discover new and successful scientific collaborations! In Croatian watercourses, three members of the genus Barbus are found, B. balcanicus, B. barbus and B. plebejus, each occupying a specific ecological niche. This study examined cytochrome b (cyt b), a common genetic marker used to describe the structure and origin of fish populations to perform a phylogenetic reconstruction of the Danube barbel. Two methods of phylogenetic inference were used: maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML), which yielded well supported trees of similar topology. The Median joining network (MJ) was generated and corroborated to show the divergence of three lineages of Barbus balcanicus on the Balkan Peninsula: Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian lineages that separated at the beginning of the Pleistocene.

Samples were collected seasonally from May 2006 to January 2009 at 8 sampling sites in the bays and channels along the eastern Adriatic coast. Zooplankton population structure showed high similarity within the investigated region, especially evident in the homogeneity of copepod com- munity composition, where relative importance of the individual species showed characteristic high ranking of small and medium-sized taxa. Zooplankton numerical variability primarily responded to seasonal variation in water temperature and spatial variation in salinity, but spatial distribution of the collected data showed that abundances were also linked to chemical and biological parameters generally used as descriptors of water quality. This indicates that zooplankton community size reflects the trophic status of an area and supports the use of zooplankton studies as an auxiliary method in the evaluation of the trophic state of coastal waters.
